Tuition Waiver and Rebate
Tuition Waiver is the exemption of the tuition portion of fees for eligible employees and their spouse and/or dependents for approved Ryerson University courses and/or programs of study. Please see the FAQ for details on applicable courses. It does not include fees such as ancillary fees, late fees, default fees, books, course materials and equipment.
Tuition Rebate is the reimbursement of the tuition portion of fees paid by employees to another institution for work-related or professional development courses approved by Ryerson. It does not include fees such as ancillary fees, late fees, default fees, books, course materials and equipment.
To learn how to access eWaiver, complete the eWaiver self service training. Access to this learning requires you to have an active RyersonID.
Who is eligible?
Staff, faculty and their families (spouses and dependants up to age 25) are eligible for tuition fee waivers. There are some restrictions depending on the employee's status. Refer to your
collective agreement or the
tuition waiver policy for details.
What courses are covered?
All regular offerings published in the full time and Continuing Education calendar, where Ryerson collects tuition fees, are eligible courses for tuition waiver. Courses in special contract programs with other educational institutions and/or special offerings hosted outside of Ontario are not eligible courses.
How much is covered?
The University shall waive for the employee, his/her spouse and /or dependent, a maximum equivalent dollar value that reflects the current annual domestic undergraduate tuition fee in non-cost recovery programs, per year, per eligible person, as determined by the University.
It does not include fees such as ancillary fees, late fees, default fees, books, course materials and equipment.
All academic policies, guidelines and rules apply to all members. This means the employee is responsible for any late fees or penalties.
How do I apply?
Waivers must be applied for prior to course start dates. Application for waivers submitted after course completion will not be approved.
1.) Before completing the eWaiver application, please ensure that the student has a valid student number. If you do not have a student number, please see below.
- Full-time undergraduate and graduate degree programs students will receive a student number with their Offer of Admission letter.
- Chang School of Continuing Education students should follow the instructions for new students located on their website (
http://www.ryerson.ca/ce).
2.) Log in to
my.ryerson.ca and click on the
eHR tab. Navigate to
Self Service; Benefits; Tuition Waiver and complete the online application for your dependent and/or yourself.
You will need the student's Ryerson student number, SIN number (if completing for your spouse or dependent), as well as program and/or desired courses in order to complete the application.
For instructions on how to submit a tuition waiver, visit this
eHR learning module and sign in with your my.ryerson ID and password.
3.) You will be notified by email when your request is approved. Once approved, the student may register in courses by visiting the Enrollment Services and Student Fees Office, POD64 in-person, and pay any outstanding fees (student union fees, ancillary fees, etc.)
PLEASE NOTE:
A tuition waiver application needs to be completed by the employee each semester before registering for further courses.
When do I complete my application?
You must always complete the application for a tuition waiver prior to registering for the course. Please refer to the University and Chang School Enrollment Schedules.
Can I register before applying for the waiver?
No. All eligible candidates are expected to follow the policy and process for tuition waiver. Candidates who do not follow the process will be responsible for paying default fees. For example, an employee who registers for a course first then applies for tuition waiver after the course start-date will be responsible for interest fees or late fees applied.
Can my tuition fee be waived after the course?
No. Any exceptions are considered on a case-by-case basis. Waiver applications submitted after completing a course may not be approved. In such cases the employee will be responsible for the full tuition fee.
How many courses can I take and when?
What happens if I fail?
An employee or his/her spouse, or dependent is required to provide proof of successful completion of any course. This is done electronically; you sign authorization for release of grades at the time of application. When an employee or his/her spouse and/or dependent does fail to complete a course in which they are enrolled in (2) successive occasions, the tuition waiver provisions shall be suspended.
How does the waiver affect the way that I file taxes?
Employees of Ryerson University, who are taking courses at Ryerson, may have their tuition treated as development. If the course is considered to be taken mainly for the benefit of the employer, it is considered employment-related and Ryerson assumes the cost. In these circumstances, neither a T4 nor a T4A is issued and the employee may not claim any related tax credits. If the course is considered to be for personal interest and not related to the business, the tuition waiver is considered a taxable benefit and will appear on the employee's T4.
Tuition that is waived for an employee's spouse or dependants is reported on a T4A in the name of the student (ie: the spouse or dependant) by Financial Services and the student must claim it on their income tax.
When might I be denied a waiver?
- If you do not meet eligibility requirements or the courses are not eligible.
- A waiver is submitted for a spouse and/or dependents prior to the employee successfully completing their probationary period.
- If the dollar value allotted per employee each year has been exceeded, the employee is responsible for the difference that exceeds that amount.
- Certain courses that are considered cost recovery or fees not collected by the university are excluded.
