Leadership Spotlight: Dr. Denise O'Neil Green

As Ryerson's inaugural assistant vice-president/vice-provost, equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), Dr. Denise O'Neil Green's leadership position is significant both within Ryerson and beyond. As the leader of the Office of EDI, she oversees Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Services, Aboriginal initiatives, Access Ryerson, educational equity, and special projects - which includes developing a robust employment equity plan between Human Resources and EDI. With a background in academia and a year now completed in this new position, Denise looks forward to making a mark for EDI in post-secondary education in Canada. Within this article, watch Denise's video on the importance of equity, diversity and inclusion in Ryerson's hiring practices. Read More

RECRUITMENT, RETENTION & EMPLOYMENT EQUITY

Are you sure your candidates know what they are getting into?

When you're hiring and you think you have the right candidate, you want to make the job sound attractive to them. With this in mind, it's not uncommon for hiring managers to forget about the importance of ensuring a candidate is fully aware of what a new job entails. Whether it is the daily tasks, the workplace environment or the hours involved, providing an accurate description of a job is a key part of the hiring process. If you're not careful, unrealistic expectations about either a workplace or the job itself could result in your new hire leaving the position. What can you do to minimize the risk? Read More

Determining Salaries for New Hires

After the challenging process of recruiting and selecting the right person for a job, the next critical step is making an offer. Determining the appropriate salary to offer a potential new hire is a major contributor to candidate acceptance. Several factors come into play when determining starting salaries, such as the candidate's background and market comparisons. Read More

What's Next in Performance Planning: Monitoring, Coaching & Feedback

The first common merit date for MAC employees has come and gone. Now that we are a few months into the common performance planning cycle, it's a good time to review how your team is progressing based on the goals you've set. This includes making sure the goals that you set at the beginning of the cycle are still appropriate, and ensuring that you and your employee are maintaining consistent communication for effective coaching and feedback. Don't forget, although only MAC employees moved to a common merit date, OPSEU staff can also be engaged in performance planning. Read More

A New Way to Think About Motivation

We are often asked by Ryerson leaders how they can better inspire motivation in their staff. In his book, "Drive: The Surprising Truth about What Motivates Us" Daniel Pink argues that we need a new way to look at motivation, what he calls Motivation 3.0. This new approach to motivation requires moving from what he calls Type X behaviour to Type I behaviour. While Type X behaviour involves being concerned with external rewards, Type I moves more towards a concern with the inherent satisfaction of the activity itself. Read More

Importance of Breaks in the Workplace

Are your employees skipping their meal breaks? Is it because they're too busy or they simply choose to work through them? Research has shown that taking regular breaks at work improves efficiency and creativity. Skipping breaks reduces productivity, impacts mental state and can lead to stress and exhaustion - not to mention it's a violation of the Employment Standards Act and Collective Agreement provisions! ACCESSIBILITY

Do you have an employee with an accessibility need?

A key goal of our monthly articles is to demystify accessibility in the workplace. In part, this is about ensuring our leaders know about all the great resources available on our Accessibility website. As well, if you ever need advice or are unable to find the answer to an accessibility question, Ryerson's Accessibility Coordinator, Heather Willis is available to help you. A member of the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Heather can help you with advice and direction about accessibility, or with addressing specific needs of your employees with disabilities. Feel free to contact Heather at accessibility@ryerson.ca or 416-979-5000, ext 4144.

MAKE YOUR MARK

United Way Campaign

With October just around the corner, it's almost time for the annual United Way campaign! Last year Ryerson raised a total of $202, 705.97 and earned a United Way Toronto 2012 Exemplary award for being in the top 15 per cent of all workplace campaigns in Toronto. While the exact dates and goals haven't been announced just yet, participants can look forward to another Online Silent Auction, the Chillin' on Gould chili fundraiser and more. The campaign is expected to kick off mid-October, with online giving ending in December and the remainder of donations finishing up near the end of January. Part of being a city builder means partnering with countless people and institutions to try to make life better for the less fortunate in our community. We're gratified that each year has brought an increase in contributions from the Ryerson community and will be reaching out to each department for volunteers to help with the campaign. Be sure to keep an eye out for more information!
