Survey Tips for Managers & Leaders
As a leader or a manager, you can actively support the People First Survey and contribute to its success. The following are some ideas to help you promote the survey to your team.
- Be a good role model by completing your own survey, and tell staff and faculty in your unit that you’ve done so!
- Between March 13 and April 3, ensure staff and faculty in your unit are given the time to respond to the survey during working hours. Provide them with access to a computer and the privacy necessary to complete the survey if they are in a public area. If you are unable to provide computer access, contact Tamar Myers at tsmyers@ryerson.ca or call (416) 979-5000 ext 7974 about drop-in locations.
- If you have weekly meetings, consider shortening one and encourage your team to complete their surveys in the remaining time.
- Have a conversation about the survey with your unit. Here are some key points to address:
Their opinions matter. The University leaders – including you – are committed to taking action to address issues identified through the survey.
Confidentiality. Reassure staff and faculty in your unit that extensive measures have been taken to safeguard the confidentiality of their answers, and emphasize the data will only be reported to Ryerson in aggregate where there are 10 or more responses. Answers to open ended questions will be coded by Ipsos and also reported on an aggregate basis. Ryerson will not be provided with any individual responses.
Union endorsement. The survey was developed by the Ryerson Employee Survey Advisory Committee, which included representation from each employee group. The union leaders support this initiative and agree that the feedback will be valuable in creating a better workplace at Ryerson.
Results. Tell staff and faculty that the results will be shared, both the positive and the negative. We expect to release University-wide results in the Summer of 2012. Regarding results for your Faculty or Administrative Department, questions with a respondent number of less than 10 cannot be shared, so the more people who respond, the better the chance of getting your specific results.
Accessibility. There are two versions of the survey available. One is an accessible version that displays only one question at a time on the screen instead of multiple questions, primarily designed for individuals who use screen readers such as JAWS, MAC VoiceOver, Windows Eyes or ZoomText.
