arrowImprovement to Performance Reviews: We've Consolidated Forms!

As we move towards a common merit date for MAC employees, we have revised the Performance Planning & Review Template [DOC], available on the HR website. The new form replaces all other review forms that have previously been in use, including the Probationary Review and Interim Review forms for MAC, OPSEU and CUPE 233. Using only one form for multiple purposes will provide an easier transition to the common merit date and more efficient review processes in the future.

With this new process required under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), all leaders and employees need to have a conversation to determine if an individual accommodation plan is necessary for emergencies.

As Executive Director, MAC/Global Spectrum Relationship, Erin McGinn has the key role as primary point of contact for Global Spectrum at the university. Having taken on her current position in 2011, Erin worked closely with Athletics and various departments at the university to ensure that that they were prepared for the move into the Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC). As well, she has the important role of ensuring that accountabilities are in place, targets that were agreed to are being met, and performance levels are satisfactory with Global Spectrum - the company that the university engaged to run the operations at the MAC. She is currently on leave from her current position as director of the president's office, where she played an integral role in managing the office for over six years.

The Chang School recently hosted a paneled event which included David Lepofsky, a blind lawyer, disability rights activist and instigator of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) legislation and its predecessor the ODA. The panel was exploring the underemployment of particular groups of people. David challenged the audience to raise their hand if they did not have a disability, or could guarantee they never would. "I don't see any hands", he exclaimed humourously - so confident was he of the results, there was no need to confirm with a sighted person how many hands were raised. He declared, "Welcome to the minority of everyone!"

Not only has Monica McKay been a valued employee of Ryerson for the past two decades, but she also attended the university as a student of the School of Social Work. Monica first began her career at Ryerson in 1993 as the Coordinator, Ryerson Aboriginal Student Services (RASS) and through her hard work and dedication, was promoted to Director, Aboriginal Initiatives in March 2012. Monica is involved with First Peoples/Aboriginal initiatives at the local, provincial, and national level. She is from Laxgalts'ap (Greenville), British Columbia and is a proud member of the Nisga'a Nation, of the House of Wisinhlhl Xb'il'tkw, and of the Gisk'aast Pdeek (Killer Whale clan).

For the School of Disability Studies at Ryerson, that marker is Canada Day. What does the Disabilities Studies program have to do with accessibility at Ryerson? Well, the short answer is everything, of course. We have a responsibility to ensure inclusion and accessibility throughout the university, so that we can create an inclusive learning and working environment for all. There are at least three areas where we strive to accomplish this.

Most job descriptions identify a small portion of the job as "other duties as assigned", usually around 5-10%. However, you may unintentionally add so many items that the employee is actually spending 50% of their time on these "other" duties. arrowEmployment Contracts are Required For Part Time and Casual Employees

If you hire a part time or casual employee, including a work study student, it is an audit requirement that you have a written contract with them that specifies details such as their hourly rate, hours of work per week, start and end dates of the contract, termination provisions, etc. Contracts should also indicate Ryerson policies that employees must be aware of and abide by, such as the Information Protection policy. Our annual financial audit is coming up soon and you may be asked to produce a copy of a signed contract to support payments made from the payroll system. She wears many hats including learner, teacher, leader and problem-solver, to name just a few. Whether interacting with staff or students, Kelly regularly demonstrates many of the characteristics and competencies of a great leader.

arrowReporting Workplace Accidents/Injuries/Incidents

In the unfortunate event that an employee sustains a work-related incident, the WSIB will cover their health costs and loss of earnings due to lost time from work. The law requires the University to report to the WSIB all work-related incidents resulting in required health care (other than first aid) and/or lost time from work within three calendar days of learning of the incident.

Join the Ryerson University team in fundraising through the 20th annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. Walk 1km or run 5km on Sunday, Oct. 2. Join by Friday, Sept. 16 to receive T-shirts with your team name printed on the back. To be eligible for team T-shirts, your team must have 10 or more members and each member must have paid the $40 participation fee or fundraised $150. Donations can be made to any team or member through the main website at www.cibcrunforthecure.com. Click on "Join a Team" or "Donate" and search for Ryerson University or any other Ryerson team. A small walking group is meeting on campus at noon every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the southwest corner of Gerrard and Church to discuss and prepare for the event. arrow10 Tips for Managing Employees at Ryerson - From Your HR Management Consultant (HRMC)

  1. Meet regularly with employees to give support and coaching.
  2. Regularly review job descriptions to ensure that the emerging goals and objectives of the department/faculty/university are reflected.
  3. Periodically discuss what learning and development opportunities the staff would benefit from.
  4. Seek advice early on about managing performance issues.
  5. Communicate clear expectations to staff about department standards and protocols (e.g. office hours, response time, dress code).
  6. Apply expectations and resources in a fair and equitable manner.
  7. Recognize the time and effort of staff and express appreciation for it. Nominate employees for appropriate awards at the University.
  8. Encourage staff to make suggestions or recommendations that would improve processes and services.
  9. Be aware that many management decisions have legal, policy, and collective agreement implications and consult with your HRMC early on.
  10. Engage in ongoing development of your leadership skills in areas such as communication and conflict management.

arrowImportant Deadlines for eHR and eAppoint during System Upgrade

During the August upgrade of eHR, there will be a short period when the system will be unavailable. In order to ensure pay is received on time, please be aware of these important deadlines for inputting and approving time in eHR and entering new hire contracts into eAppoint. Any time that is not approved in eHR by the deadline will be denied and not processed. Employees will need to re-enter their denied time entries for inclusion in the following payroll. Any contract which is not approved in eAppoint by the deadline will be processed after the upgrade.

We know that in such a busy environment, administrative tasks such as inputting and approving time can seem insignificant to managers, but there are several crucial reasons to do so. Determining whether or not someone is an employee is a threshold issue from which all rights and obligations flow. This means that if an individual is determined to be an employee, then Ryerson has specific employer obligations under Ontario legislation such as the Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Code, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Labour Relations Act, as well as federal legislation, such as Canada Revenue Agency income tax regulations. On the other hand, if someone is not an employee, the above would not apply, right? Well, recent case law begs to differ with this view.
