Understanding Your Out-of-Province/Out-of-Country Emergency Medical Coverage

A medical emergency while travelling can be a frightening and costly experience.  But with the Out-of-Province/Out-of-Country Emergency Medical Coverage under your Ryerson Extended Health Care Plan, you are only a phone call away from the protection you need.

Any time you leave Ontario, you and your eligible family members can receive travel assistance for up to 180 days.  Your coverage provides for eligible emergency expenses and emergency services.  An emergency means an acute illness or accidental injury that requires immediate medically necessary treatment prescribed by a doctor.

Before you travel, be sure to print your pre-filled "Travel Card" from the Sun Life Plan Member Services website by signing in at www.mysunlife.ca. Click on the "Take me to…" drop down box and select "Print Travel Card."  Carry this card with you whenever you travel outside of Ontario.

You have access to the expertise of Sun Life's emergency travel assistance partner, Europ Assistance, 24 hours a day. At the time of a medical emergency, you or someone with you must contact Europ Assistance before receiving medical care.  The toll-free numbers are on the Travel Card.  Europ Assistance will arrange for direct payment to the service provider (e.g. hospital or physician) so you are not out of pocket for expenses incurred.  Any invasive or investigative procedures (e.g. surgery, MRI etc.) must be pre-authorized by Europ Assistance, except in extreme circumstances.  If Europ Assistance is not contacted, your claim could be reduced or declined.

You can also use your smartphone as your travel card by downloading Sun Life's free BlackBerry or iPhone application, my Sun Life Mobile, from the Apple App Store or BlackBerry App World. Sign into Sun Life Mobile using your Sun Life access ID and password.

For detailed medical coverage while travelling, visit the Human Resources website at www.ryerson.ca/hr/benefits/benefits_by_group. Select your health benefit group, click on Extended Health Care Plan details, and scroll down to Out-of-province/out-of-country coverage.
