DIRECTOR

Winston Isaac, PhD, CHE

Dr. Isaac has been associated with the School of Health Services Management from 1995 – first as a part-time instructor and later as a faculty member teaching health policy and health human resource management. He was the Director of the School for one 5-year term after completing a one-year interim Directorship. His research foci include health human resource development, specifically in the areas of health care management and men's health issues. He is also a partner in a large CIHR 5-year grant examining health human resources. During his tenure as Director of the School, several student projects were accepted for publication, with one student submission winning a 3M Award.

Dr. Isaac's academic preparation spans the fields of respiratory technology, education, psychology, business and health policy and administration. Dr. Isaac received his Master's in Education from Central Michigan University, as well as a Master's of Public Administration from Queen's University. He received his Ph.D. in Adult and Continuing Education from Michigan State University. He has contributed to the university by participating on a number of committees and has led the development of the Health Information Management program in the School. Most recently he sat on the planning committees for a number of Certificate programs in The Chang School for Continuing Education.

Professionally, Dr. Isaac is a Certified Health Executive of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives. He also serves as a reviewer for the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA). For the past two years, Dr. Isaac has been the Chair of teams reviewing US undergraduate health administration programs for certification/accreditation with AUPHA. He has also been invited to review undergraduate program applications on a provincial level for the province of British Columbia. He is a frequent presenter at the professional meetings and conferences of the AUPHA and the specialty meetings of the undergraduate programs of AUPHA. He also presents at annual meetings and conferences of the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).

Dr. Isaac has extensive management experience at various levels within the Ontario Healthcare systems, ranging in areas from acute care to rehabilitation to chronic & complex long term care. He has also worked as a Health Policy Analyst and submits peer reviews for peer reviewed journals in health administration in the areas of Health Management Education. Dr. Isaac has also served on the editorial board of Health Administration Press.

Dr. Isaac received the honour of" Alumnus of Distinction" by the Michener Institute and was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Central West Local Health Integration Network (CW LHIN).

FACULTY

Pria Nippak, PhD, MSc, HBSc

Pria Nippak, Phd, MSc, HBSc, HBA (Toronto) is an Assistant Professor within the School of Health Services Management at Ryerson University. In addition, she is the Program Coordinator of the Gerontology Certificate, which provides her with many opportunities to support students through their training. She received her academic training at the University Toronto where she examined the influence of both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatments for promoting healthy aging. Her current research interests include the examination of supportive housing initiatives to promote healthy aging in place, the examination of emergency wait time strategies to promote better health delivery in an acute care setting, examining ways to promote learning through the use of computer simulations and exploring whether core competencies in health care programs are providing adequate training to meet the needs of health care employers. Pria is an educator with many years of experience teachi
ng at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University within the areas of research methods and design, statistics, program planning and evaluation, epidemiology, neuroscience, and addictions. In addition, she provides continuous faculty support for the capstone practicum course, which is the final course requirement before degree completion, and is offered through both the School of Health Services Management and the School of Health Information Management.

James (Jim) Tiessen, PhD, MSc, BSc

James (Jim) H. Tiessen is Associate Professor, School of Health Services Management, at the Ted Rogers School of Management, Ryerson University.  He earned degrees at the University of Alberta (B.Sc.), Guelph (M.Sc.) and York University’s Schulich School of Business (Ph.D.).  Jim was a DeGroote School of Business McMaster University faculty member for 10 years before joining Ryerson in 2008.  He served as MBA Director at both universities.  Prior to his university career, Jim lived in Japan and later worked for the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).    Dr. Tiessen’s research has been published in the Journal of Business Venturing, International Marketing Review, Canadian Journal of Administrative Studies and other journals.  He has served as President of the Japan Studies Association of Canada.  He is a visiting Scholar at the Asian Institute, Munk Centre of Global Affairs, University of Toronto (2012-13).  In fall 2012, he was a visiting research fellow at the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, Tokyo Japan.

Dr. Tiessen studies Japanese healthcare, particularly its hospitals, which sit at the centre of that system.  He teaches courses on healthcare management, research methods, strategy and international business.

PROGRAM ASSISTANT

Carrie Wiebe, BMus

Carrie received her undergraduate in Music Performance from the University of Manitoba, and an Opera Diploma from the Vancouver Academy of Music. In addition to her work as an administrator at Ryerson, she is also an accomplished singer, and was seen most recently in the Toronto Mirvish production of The Sound of Music.

 

INSTRUCTORS

Caterina Valentino, PhD, FACHE

Caterina Valentino is an independent thinker and innovator in the delivery of online education. Her reputation as an engaging and energetic instructor in both virtual and face-to face classrooms has led her to receive accolades and awards from her students and peers.
Caterina received her PhD from the University of Toronto, Department of Health, Policy, Management, and Evaluation. Prior to receiving her PhD she completed post graduate education at Dalhousie University (Master Public Administration) and Rotman School (Master of Business Administration). She has held senior leadership positions in acute, long term care, and in-home health care delivery. In 2008 she was the recipient of both the Sue Williams Excellence in Teaching Award, Faculty of Community Services, Ryerson University and the Ryerson Teaching Award, the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education. She is actively involved in both the Canadian College of Health Services Executives and the American College of Healthcare Executives. Dr. Valentino is a life-long learner who continues to pursue her education.

Jake Pringle, D.C., MBA, BSc (Hons)

Clinically, Dr. Pringle is a registered Chiropractor in good standing with the College of Chiropractors of Ontario. He is a Certified Health Executive (Canada) and is a member of Academy Health and the Canadian Association of Health Services and Policy Research. Since 2000, he has consulted on and provided independent expert chiropractic assessments for motor vehicle accident claims and since 1992 has maintained a clinical practice within a multidisciplinary medical clinic in Toronto providing chiropractic treatment and services to patients of all conditions including but not limited to motor vehicle accident and work related injuries.

A part-time Doctoral Student (DBA), an M.B.A. graduate, Clinician, Instructor, and past Program Manager for Ryerson's School of Health Services Management. Current research interests include the use of business simulations in education, quality and accountability in higher education institutions and brand management in higher education institutions.

Brenda Gamble, PhD, CHE

Dr. Gamble received her PhD in Medical Sciences from the University of Toronto in 2006 and is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). Prior to her appointment at UOIT Dr. Gamble was an Assistant Professor and Supervisor of Studies for the Health Studies Program in the Department of Social Sciences, at the University of Toronto in Scarborough, Ontario. She has been an instructor in the School of Health Services Management at Ryerson University since 2003. Dr. Gamble has received several academic awards including the Government of Ontario Dr. Arnie Aberman Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology at the University of Toronto. She is a member of the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Sciences' Research Ethics Board. Currently, Dr. Gamble is a co-investigator on 3 Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) grants and Principal Investigator for the CIHR grant Quality and Safety: Canada's Medical Laboratory Sector. Research areas include health human resources, accountability in healthcare, interprofessional practice and medical laboratory sector.

Terrie Tucker, MBA, BA (Econ)

Terrie Tucker is the Director of E Health and Chief Privacy Officer at
Baycrest. E Health at Baycrest includes Information Technology,
Informatics, Health Records, Admitting, and Decision Support. She has
over 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry, in community
hospitals, Mental Health Facilities, Complex Continuing Care, and Long
Term Care. Terrie has an MBA and undergrad degree in Economics.

Jeff Kwan, MBA, CMA

Jeff has a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) with a focus in
Strategy & Finance and is a Certified Management Accountant (CMA). He
also holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree with a major in
Genetics and is ITIL certified (Information Technology Infrastructure
Library).

Jeff currently works at the Central Local Health Integration Network
(LHIN) as the Sr. Consultant of Performance and Funding. He is
responsible for leading and directing activities that enhance
accountability through performance measurement and management. His
previous work history includes the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie
where he worked in both the Finance and Decision Support departments.
Prior to this he held management positions in both the
telecommunications and IT sectors.

Michael Newman, B COMM., LLB, LLM

Michael Newman, B COMM., LLB, LLM (Health Law), Vice-Chair and Senior Lawyer Member of the Consent and Capacity Board of Ontario(CCB), a provincial adjudicative tribunal with jurisdiction pursuant to the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, Substitute Decisions Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act and Mandatory Blood Testing Act.

Michael teaches Law for Health Managers in the Faculty of Community Services, School of Health Services Management at Ryerson University. He also teaches
at York University, Osgoode Hall Law School in the Mental Health Certificate program and in the Master's program in Health Law.
