< ABOUT >
OUR MISSION
The mission of Ryerson
University's School of Interior
Design is to educate students
for the dynamic, complex and
demanding practice of Interior
Design in a learning environment
that balances the theoretical
and the practical, the
experiential and the conceptual.
Drawing on the resources of a
vibrant city and a university
dedicated to the advancement of
applied knowledge, the School
prepares graduates for
leadership in the Interior
Design profession through
understanding and consideration
of the technological, aesthetic,
ideological, environmental,
cultural and social dimensions
of the built environment.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
The School of Interior Design is
housed within the Faculty of
Communication and Design and
reflects an integration of
theory and practice designed to
develop practitioners who
graduate from the school with
both professional skills and the
critical and intellectual
capacity to assume positions of
leadership. An immersive
environment introduces interior
design students to the
terminology, marketplace, and
professional issues of practice,
while an experiential curriculum
emphasizes both studio and
workshop to stimulate
creativity, experimentation,
problem solving and innovation.
Important values for the school
are creativity, passion,
diversity, commitment,
collaboration, excellence and
vision.
The School takes a humanistic
view of design to place the user
at the centre of our interest in
placemaking; the creation of
meaningful spaces that fully
support human activity. Also
shaping our approach to interior
design are concerns with
ecological sustainability,
global relevance, economic
exigencies and emerging
technologies. By means of a
careful understanding of
context, cultural practices and
research into human values and
needs, projects engage students
with broad issues at all levels
of the program.
OUR GOALS
Graduates of this School will
possess the knowledge and skills
necessary to successfully enter
the profession of interior
design as entry-level designers.
Problem solving skills learned
through a carefully honed design
process may also allow
graduates to transfer their
knowledge to related fields.
Graduating students should:
1. understand and interpret the
relationships between the
natural and built environments
and the complexity and variety
of human responses to them;
2. recognize the broad impact of
design interventions and develop
responsible design solutions
that respond to issues of
ecological sustainability and
global awareness;
3. engage in critical thinking
and research through the
systematic application of the
design process ;
4. respond to design challenges
creatively, holistically and
spatially;
5. translate design concepts
into resolved spaces with an
intended quality and character
demonstrating entry-level skill
and understanding of detailing
and materials;
6. articulate and defend the
conceptual basis of their work;
7. show an ability to
effectively communicate design
ideas using the graphic
vocabulary of the profession;
and
8. address client’s needs while
designing for the health, safety
and welfare of all hypothetical
users by applying regulations,
codes, laws and standards.
9. recognize and understand the
extent of an interior designer’s
professional responsibilities
and commitments; |
