Students should select Physics (Grade 11 or higher) and the Art option in Grades 11 and 12 if available. Subject to competition, candidates may be required to present averages/ grades above the minimum.

Ryerson will allow the mixing of U, M, and OAC courses as applicable, but comparable courses will not be double-counted. As well, Ryerson will not accept the "out of school" component of Grade 12 U/M co-op courses for admission consideration. (See chart comparing new and old Ontario curriculum).

A portfolio submission will be required, details of which will be sent by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as part of the admissions selection process, and will be considered with the applicant's academic performance in the admissions process.

All applicants are required to participate in a portfolio review. Applicants living within the 400km radius of Toronto will be required to attend a portfolio interview and test day. Applicants who live outside of the 400km radius of Toronto will be given the option of attending the portfolio review day or mailing in their submission. Mailed-in submissions must include: a portfolio; a personal essay and a design test.

Applicants will be required to contact the School of Interior Design to confirm their interview date or their mail-in intentions.

(1) Portfolio:
The applicants¡¦ ability to express themselves visually is an important part of the portfolio review. The portfolio may include school assignments as well as work completed on their own. THE APPLICANT¡¦S ABILITY TO DRAW WELL IS ESSENTIAL and should be demonstrated in a variety of forms. The portfolio will be judged on creativity, originality and the potential for the applicant to complete the 4-year program. The portfolio should be organized to include a variety of work demonstrating 2D and 3D potential (may be in a variety of media but work must include pencil, ink and coloured media). As well, the portfolio must include the following:

The following items must be in black and white:

- A freehand drawing of a collection of organic material (e.g., leaves, pods);
- A freehand drawing of a tubular structure (e.g., bicycle, metal chair);

There is no limit to the items put in a portfolio.

A statement of a maximum of twenty-five words identifying each item is also required. All work shall be neatly assembled in an 81/2¡¨ x 11¡¨ portfolio, stapled on the top left side of the page. Applicants should have a cover page identifying the applicant¡¦s name, reference number and complete contact information (i.e., address, phone, email, etc.)

(2) Personal Essay:

This assignment should be thought through carefully. The essay should include a description of the applicant¡¦s background, their intended career goals and educational objectives and should answer the question ¡§Why do you want to be an Interior Designer?¡¨ It should represent a clear and accurate picture of them as a person, their talents and abilities, with an indication as to how attending Ryerson¡¦s School of Interior Design will help them to fulfill their goals.

(3) Design Test:
