Admission Requirements
OSSD or equivalent with six Grade 12
U/M courses including English
(ENG4U/EAE4U preferred), Grade 11 U
or M or Grade 12 U Mathematics (one
of MCF3M, MCR3U, MCB4U, MGA4U,
MDM4U), and one additional Grade 12
U or M course from: Visual Arts
(AVI4M), Economics: Analyzing
Current Economic Issues (CIA4U),
Canadian and World Issues: A
Geographical Analysis (CGW4U),
Canada: History, Identity and
Culture (CHI4U), Physics (SPH4U),
Communications Technology (TGJ4M) or
Technological Design (TDJ4M). Other
Grade 12 U or M courses in Canadian
and World Issues may be considered
on an individual basis. A minimum
grade of 60 percent or higher is
required in each course. Students
should select Physics (Grade 11 or
higher) and the Art option in Grades
11 and 12 if available. Preference
may be given to applicants who have
included History or Visual Arts/Art
History in their Grade 12 U/M
studies. There are also non-academic
criteria. Subject to competition,
candidates may be required to
present averages/ grades above the
minimum.
Ryerson will allow the mixing of U,
M, and OAC courses as applicable,
but comparable courses will not be
double-counted. As well, Ryerson
will not accept the "out of school"
component of Grade 12 U/M co-op
courses for admission consideration.

A portfolio submission will be
required, details of which will be
sent by the Office of Undergraduate
Admissions as part of the admissions
selection process, and will be
considered with the applicant's
academic performance in the
admissions process.
All applicants are required to
participate in a portfolio review.
Applicants living within the 400km
radius of Toronto will be required
to attend a portfolio interview and
test day. Applicants who live
outside of the 400km radius of
Toronto will be given the option of
attending the portfolio review day
or mailing in their submission.
Mailed-in submissions must include:
a portfolio; a personal essay and a
design test.
Applicants will be required to
contact the School of Interior
Design to confirm their interview
date or their mail-in intentions.
(1) Portfolio:
The applicants¡¦ ability to express
themselves visually is an important
part of the portfolio review. The
portfolio may include school
assignments as well as work
completed on their own. THE
APPLICANT¡¦S ABILITY TO DRAW WELL IS
ESSENTIAL and should be demonstrated
in a variety of forms. The portfolio
will be judged on creativity,
originality and the potential for
the applicant to complete the 4-year
program. The portfolio should be
organized to include a variety of
work demonstrating 2D and 3D
potential (may be in a variety of
media but work must include pencil,
ink and coloured media). As well,
the portfolio must include the
following:
The following items must be in black
and white:
- A freehand drawing of a staircase;
- A freehand drawing of a collection
of organic material (e.g., leaves,
pods);
- A freehand drawing of a tubular
structure (e.g., bicycle, metal
chair);
There is no limit to the items
put in a portfolio.
A statement of a maximum of
twenty-five words identifying each
item is also required. All work
shall be neatly assembled in an
81/2¡¨ x 11¡¨ portfolio, stapled on
the top left side of the page.
Applicants are NOT TO INCLUDE
ORIGINAL WORK - inexpensively
reproduced drawings, photographs,
reductions, and photocopies are
acceptable and desired. Applicants
should have a cover page identifying
the applicant¡¦s name, reference
number and complete contact
information (i.e., address, phone,
email, etc.)
(2) Personal Essay:
FOR MAIL - IN OPTION ONLY. This is
the applicant¡¦s opportunity to
convince the committee of their
seriousness and the appropriateness
of them studying at Ryerson
University. This assignment should
be thought through carefully. The
essay should include a description
of the applicant¡¦s background, their
intended career goals and
educational objectives and should
answer the question ¡§Why do you want
to be an Interior Designer?¡¨ It
should represent a clear and
accurate picture of them as a
person, their talents and abilities,
with an indication as to how
attending Ryerson¡¦s School of
Interior Design will help them to
fulfill their goals.
(3) Design Test:
FOR MAIL - IN OPTION ONLY. The
applicant will be on their personal
honor to complete this test within
the given timeframe allotted of 6
hours. The format for submitting the
completed design test should be no
larger than an 81/2¡¨ x 11¡¨, stapled
together with a cover page
indicating the applicant¡¦s name,
reference number and complete
contact information (i.e., address,
phone, email, etc.).
