Support from International Student Services

As part of its mission to provide crucial support services and promote diversity at Ryerson, International Student Services (ISS) also provides specialized services and assistance to faculty, staff and administrators.

Services range from immigration consultation, hiring of international students, faculty and staff, to cross-cultural exposure and communication training, health insurance and travel overseas.


Immigration Consultation

  • Understanding Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) policies
  • Work permit and temporary resident visa applications for international faculty and staff
  • Special work permit applications for spouses of international faculty and staff (Spousal Employment Authorization Program)
  • Permanent Residence applications to Canada
  • Support to faculties in assisting probationary and suspended international students
  • Applying for US immigration documents including, visitor, study and work visas.
  • Immigration policies for traveling overseas

Employment Consultation

  • Hiring International Students
    Advice in understanding Ryerson's policies and procedures for hiring international students, confirming international students' on-campus employment eligibility during the extension of immigration documents, completing an employment contract for international students' SIN applications and facilitation of the ISS Work Experience Program (ISSWEP).
  • Hiring International Faculty
    Advice in understanding immigration policies and procedures for hiring international faculty, preparing employment letters for work permit applications, submitting work permit applications to the Canadian Embassy and obtaining a SIN.

Health Insurance

  • University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP)
    Assistance with completing enrollment documents, advising, reimbursement requests, coverage for dependants, etc.
  • Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP)
    Advising to determine eligibility, understand and complete the application process.
  • Alternative Health Insurance Coverage
    Information on various health insurance packages that are available to non-immigrants who are not eligible for UHIP or OHIP.
