Laboratory Hazard Signs

Laboratory hazard signs are required on every door of a public hallway or common access that leads into a space where hazardous materials are stored and/or used.  The new signs will serve to inform all students, faculty, staff and visitors to that space of any necessary safety requirements and precautions.

Signage that is visually consistent and fully complete will make lab spaces more easily identifiable and will further reinforce the health and safety of the Ryerson community.

Information on the sign includes:

  •  Required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Potential hazards
  • Substances used and/or stored
  • Contact information for the lab space including:
    • Principal investigator
    • Emergency Contact
  • WHMIS symbols

To request a new sign for a laboratory or support space (i.e. chemical storage room), please follow the following steps:

1. Log in to the IRM portal using your my.ryerson ID and choose Signage Request Form from the list of forms on the left.

2.  Complete the information for required equipment, contents and uses of the lab space.

3.  Click Submit to generate your printable colour lab sign.  Note:  If you do not have a colour printer and/or you cannot print in legal format, you can request that IRM print the sign for you by selecting the applicable checkbox before clicking Submit.

4.  Installation is easy!  Simply open the sign holder and insert the printed sign.

Please contact IRM for support if any of the below applies:

  • You have a lab, but no sign holder was installed.
  • You have a sign holder, but the room is not a lab (e.g. classroom, office) or is a computer lab only (e.g. no chemical, biological or physical hazards typically present in scientific or engineering laboratories).
