FAQ Simulations Header

Please review the FAQ’s section prior to booking a simulation.  We update this section frequently as we encounter new questions regarding the Simulation Training Program.

A separate page of FAQ’s for simulators can be found here.

How long does a simulation normally take?

The ISTC books our simulators (actors) for a minimum of 2 hours per simulation.  You may choose to schedule the simulation for more or less than 2 hours.  We recommend allowing at least 90 minutes for the scenario to play out and 15 minutes at the end for the simulator to provide feedback to the participants.

How much does a simulation cost?

The cost of a simulation varies depending on the length and complexity of the scenario, the number of characters involved and the level of customization required.  Please contact us for current ISTC rates.

Ryerson faculty are required to seek departmental approval for all costs associated with the simulation.   We will provide a cost estimate for our services upon request and, where possible, offer suggestions as to how to obtain the necessary funding.

To review your learning objectives or professional development needs with a member of our team or to obtain a quote, please contact the ISTC office.

My event is taking place in less than 4 weeks.  Can I still book a simulation?

Please contact the Administrative Coordinator at 416 979-5000, ext. 4802, or by email at istc@ryerson.ca to discuss your requirements prior to submitting a request.  Once we have reviewed the details with you we will confirm whether or not we are able to schedule a simulation in time for your event.

What if I would like to book more than one simulation?

Multiple simulations can be submitted on the same form.  Simply indicate the correct simulation number and title, preferred date, start and end times, etc., for each simulation in the spaces provided.

Why do I need to speak to an ISTC trainer before my first simulation?

Our trainers are here to support you in your role as facilitator.  Communication with the trainer prior to your first ISTC simulation allows us to clearly understand your learning goals and objectives, provides you with an opportunity to raise any questions or concerns you may have about how to facilitate the simulation and ensures that we can deliver the best possible experience for your students.

What if I need to cancel/change the date of my simulation?

We require a minimum of 3 working days notice for cancellations or changes to simulation bookings.  Simulations that are cancelled or rescheduled with less than the required notice will be charged to your account.  Exceptions may be made in case of emergency.

The ISTC reserves the right to cancel a simulation due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g. simulator is sick) at any time with no charge to your account.

What if I can’t find the simulation I’m looking for in the Catalogue?  How do I go about designing a new one?

The Interpersonal Skills Teaching Centre (ISTC) can develop custom simulations to support your learning objectives, existing professional development initiatives or performance assessment models.

Our training staff will meet with interested parties, review their needs, develop an appropriate simulation scenario and train the simulators as required.  Customized simulations, or revisions to existing scenarios, are provided on a fee-for-service basis and costs will vary according to the degree of innovation or adaptation that is required.  We provide a cost estimate upon request following the initial consultation.

To arrange a meeting with a member of our training staff please contact the Administrative Coordinator at 416 979-5000, ext. 4802, or by email at istc@ryerson.ca.

Can I request changes to the character or settting?

Yes, provided that you notify us of the changes on your simulation request form at the time of booking.  Revisions to existing scenarios (including characters, setting, etc.) require a consultation with an ISTC trainer and are provided on a fee-for-service basis.  Costs will vary according to the degree of innovation or adaptation that is required.  We will provide a cost estimate upon request following your consultation with our staff.

To arrange a meeting with a member of our training staff please contact the Administrative Coordinator at 416 979-5000, ext. 4802, or by email at istc@ryerson.ca.

Important note:  We ask that instructors do not request last-minute changes to the setting or character on the day of delivery as it may adversely affect the authenticity of the simulation experience.  ISTC simulators can refuse to enact any changes they feel are beyond the scope of their training/understanding of a given scenario.

Is it possible to use simulations for large group sessions (e.g. over 50)?

We have found that simulations can be an effective learning and development tool, regardless of the size of the group/class.  Often, simply by altering the style of presentation, the simulation can be adapted to suit the needs of a larger group without reducing the impact of the experience.  Please feel free to contact us for further support or detailed suggestions as to how to deliver effective simulations to larger groups.

Can I request a certain simulator for my simulation?

We will do our best to meet your request for a particular simulator (actor), however we cannot guarantee their availability.  We train multiple simulators in most roles so if the simulator you requested is not available we will book another skilled member of our team who meets the particular requirements for the simulation.

You can assist us with this process by indicating any special instructions or providing specific feedback on past experiences when you book your simulation.  That way, our trainers can ensure that this information is communicated to the simulator well in advance and any questions they may have can be answered prior to the simulation.
