Each year the School of Journalism awards thousands of dollars to reward academic excellence and assist students in meeting the costs of their university education. Below are the current Fall applied awards offered by the School of Journalism.
It is important to note that the monetary amounts cannot be guaranteed and that an award may be cancelled without notice. Please ensure that you read all of the details carefully and submit full and complete applications before the required deadlines to the Awards Committee. All applications should include one copy for each member of the Awards Committee.
For the 2012-13 academic year please submit five copies of your application packages to the Awards Committee.

John A. Honderich Bursary in Journalism
(estimated at $2,000)
Criteria:
- Students must be residents of Ontario;
- Demonstrate financial need as determined by completion of the school’s Student Budget Form;
- Be of good academic standing.
- Photo Consent form
Please write a letter indicating how this award would make a difference in your life, and fill in the attached financial needs form. Note that the form will be sent to Student Finance for confirmation. In addition, CGPA will be taken into account if several applicants have similar financial situations. Please ensure that you include your full name and student number in the application.
Juanita Millesse Memorial Award
(estimated at $225)
Award: To the student demonstrating academic proficiency and with proven financial need. Financial need is a significant criterion. Those whose personal circumstances have affected their academic performance are encouraged to apply.
Criteria:
- Applicants must be starting the second year of the four-year program at the time of application;
- Students should submit what they consider to be their best written piece of work from first year;
- Students should submit a cover letter indicating their eligibility for this award;
- Complete the Student Budget Form;
- NO APPLICATION will be accepted without completion of the budget form.

Lauder Internship Award
(Estimated at $1,500)
Award: Established out of the generosity of Scott Lauder who taught English literature to Ryerson Journalism students for more than three decades. The award helps cover expenses associated with an out-of-town internship course placement and is given to a student who might not otherwise be able to finance such a placement.
Application Deadline: throughout the year, when an out-of-town internship is sought or secured.
Time of Award: when the internship is secured or completed, as determined by the Awards Committee.
Criteria
To be eligible for this award, students must:
- Be full-time students in clear academic standing enrolled in the undergraduate Internship course and pursuing an out-of-town placement;
- Demonstrate financial need as determined by completion of the school’s Internship Budget Form;
- Demonstrate academic and professional merit in composition of the application letter and resume.

Len Coates Memorial Awards
(Estimated at $3,500 each)
Award:To provide financial assistance and to recognize the academic achievement of a student in the School of Journalism, in memory of Len Coates and his extraordinary contribution to the field of journalism. One award will be offered to a student entering each of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of study in the Bachelor of Journalism program.
After he graduated, Len Coates was a pioneer of automobile journalism in Canada, first at the Toronto Telegram and later at the Toronto Star. He was the first president of the Automotive Journalists' Association of Canada. Jim Kenzie of the Star wrote: "Len's facile conversation, easy charm and fluid writing style only partly mask a rigid integrity - get the facts right; hold true to your principles; tell it like it is."
Criteria:
To be eligible for this award, students must:
- Be a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident or a Protected Person;
- Be an Ontario resident;
- Complete the Student Budget Form;
- Students should submit a cover letter indicating their eligibility for this award;
- Be entering 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of the 4-year Bachelor of Journalism program;
- Demonstrate overall excellence in studies with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The Rolf Lockwood NewCom Scholarship
(estimated at $1,000)
Award: The Rolf Lockwood NewCom Scholarship was created to honour the career of NewCom Business Media writer and publisher Rolf Lockwood.
Criteria:
- Applicants must be in the third or fourth year of the journalism program at the time of application;
- Students must be in clear academic standing, with a minimum GPA of 3.30 (B+);
- Students must have written and submitted the best example of a magazine article focusing on business journalism over the previous year;
- Students must include a cover letter explaining how they meet the criteria above and what business journalism means to them.

The Toronto Hong Kong Lions Club Entrance Scholarship
(estimated at $1,500)
Award: This award recognizes academic proficiency and financial need in students entering the four-year Bachelor of Journalism program. The Toronto Hong Kong Lions Club supports the local community through scholarships and other forms of funding.
Criteria:
- Applicants must be entering the first year of the four-year Bachelor of Journalism program at the time of applciation
- Students must submit a cover letter outlining financial need as well as a completed financial statement on the budget form (budget forms are available via a link on the journalism homepage or from the journalism office)
- Photo Consent form
The Weather Network Scholarship
(estimated at $2,500)
The award is open to a deserving student enrolled in the School of Journalism or the School of Radio and Television Arts.
The award supports cultural diversity and is open to members of visible minorities, Aboriginal students and students with a disability. (In the case of a student with a disability they should be registered with Ryerson's Access Centre or be willing to register.) There will be one scholarship offered each year.
Criteria:
- The student will be officially registered in the third or fourth year of the Journalism degree program or the Radio and Television Arts degree program, Television major only.
- Students will have a grade point average of 2.75 or better, clear academic standing and demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in Television.

To apply, please submit a one page letter which discusses the contribution you believe you can make to the Television industry.
