Student Awards

School of Journalism

Recent Award Recipients

Each year the School of Journalism is able to recognize and reward the academic excellence of its students thanks to the generous support of its many donors. There are over 60 awards offered annually by the School. We invite you to read the list of awards linked below. We are proud that our awards honour some of the major figures and institutions in Canadian journalism, as well as former students.

The School Awards Committee, in consultation with course professors, selects many of the award winners directly. However, there are other School of Journalism awards where it is necessary for students to apply. Some of these awards have a spring deadline and others have a fall deadline for applications. Students, please read the criteria carefully and be sure to submit all the information requested, including any budget forms required.

The School will send reminders to students' Ryerson e-mail addresses with detailed instructions regarding award deadlines and procedures.

Application packages should be submitted by the deadlines to:

Winners will be notified in writing and invited to the Awards Night ceremony in November. If you win an award, please plan to attend to meet the donor and celebrate your accomplishment.

Occasionally, an award may not be given in a particular year. Either the funds are not available or no suitable candidate is identified. The list of School Awards linked below identifies the approximate value of each award. Please keep in mind that award values vary slight depending on donation levels, investment returns, number of winners, etc.

Privacy Statement

As part of administering awards, the School of Journalism Awards Committee may access student information to evaluate any relevant application materials, including course marks and grade point averages. As well, the School routinely notifies donors of the names of winning students and publishes those names in the Awards Night program and on the School website. The names, student numbers and addresses of winners of monetary awards are forward to the Student Financial Assistance office, which issues award cheques.

In addition, others at the university may use limited information about your award to promote good news in departmental brochures, newsletters or other forms of media. Other than as set out here, we will not disclose your personal information unless we obtain your prior written consent or unless required by law.
