Spring Awards
Each year the School of Journalism awards thousands of dollars to recognize academic excellence and assist students in meeting the costs of their university education.
Below are the current Spring applied awards offered by the School of Journalism. Submissions are typically due in May and notification is sent out to all students currently enrolled in the School of Journalism.
It is important to note that the monetary amounts cannot be guaranteed and that an award may be cancelled without notice. Please ensure that you read all of the details carefully and submit full and complete applications before the required deadlines to the Awards Committee. All applications must include five copies of each award application.

Betty Michalyshyn Memorial Scholarship
($1,000)
Award: For outstanding academic achievement in cultural journalism or critical writing on the arts, as demonstrated in course work, published writing and/or broadcast material.
Criteria:
- Students must be a full-time student in clear academic standing enrolled in the final two years of the four year BJ program;
- Be self-nominated or be nominated by faculty or a member of the community;
- Submit written work on cultural journalism or critical writing as demonstrated in course work, published writing and/or broadcast material.
The Del Bell Memorial Award
(estimated at $800)
Award: For overall academic proficiency, with a demonstrated flair for news and feature writing and demonstrated financial need.The award does not necessarily go to the student with the top academic standing. For this award, writing and financial need are more important than academic standing alone.
Criteria:
- Applicants must be enrolled in the first year of the four-year program;
- Students should submit what they consider to be their best written piece of work from first year;
- Students should submit a cover letter indicating their eligibility for this award. A financial statement is required;
- It is important to provide as much detail as possible on your financial need. The information will be seen only by faculty reviewing the applications and, in some cases, by those who sponsor the awards;
- NO APPLICATION will be accepted without completion of the budget form.
The Donner Canadian Foundation Howard Intrator Memorial Scholarship
(estimated at $5,000)
Award: The Donner Canadian Foundation Howard Intrator Memorial Scholarship will recognize the outstanding business writing accomplishment of a student in a magazine of newspaper course in the Bachelor of Journalism program. Students should submit their best example of a business news or business feature article.
Criteria:
- Applicants must be enrolled in the second or third year of the four-year program at the time of application;
- Students must have a minimum CGPA of 2.5;
- Students must submit a cover letter indicating their eligibility for this award;
- Students must submit their best example of a business news or business feature article.
The Floyd Chalmers Prize for Excellence in Business Journalism
(estimated at $2,500)
Award: The Ticker Club dedicated this annual award to the memory of one of its founding members, Floyd Chalmers, former publisher and editor-in-chief of the Financial Post. The prize is available to students in clear academic standing who are enrolled in the Bachelor of Journalism program in the School of Journalism who meet the criteria as detailed below.
Selection Criteria and Award Administration: All Applications for the prize shall be submitted to the School of Journalism. All submissions for the prize will be held in confidence and the privacy of individuals shall be respected. Along with members of the Awards Committee for the School of Journalism, representatives from The Ticker Club may be involved in the process leading up to the selection of the winning candidate. The final selection of a winner of a Floyd Chalmers Prize for Excellence in Business Journalism resides with the Chair of the School of Journalism.
Criteria:
- Enrolled in any year of the BJ program at the time of application;
- Be in clear academic standing;
- Have written or produced the best example of business journalism over the past academic year showing investigative skills and intellectual depth.
The recipient(s) will be expected to attend a Ticker Club meeting where they will be presented as the winner of the Floyd Chalmers Prize for Excellence in Business Journalism.
HaakSaan Award for Excellence in Online Reporting
(estimated at $3,000)
For a full-time, third year BJourn student who demonstrates excellence in applying journalistic principles of fairness, accuracy and good writing to online reporting.
Award: This award is made possible by a generous pledge of annual support from the Korean Canadian Scholarship Foundation. As well as supporting academic excellence, the mission of the Foundation is to make a difference in the Korean-Canadian community and Canada in general by encouraging young leaders not only to achieve excellence in their chosen fields but to become valued citizens in their communities.
Criteria:
To be eligible for this award, students must:
- submit online work completed in the academic year just ended, while the student was enrolled as a full-time, third-year student in the School of Journalism undergraduate program;
- have a minimum CGPA of 2.67;
- clear academic standing.
Application Package
A completed application must include:
- Application letter explaining how you meet the eligibility criteria;
- One example of a piece of reporting completed for the web in the academic year just ended, which demonstrates fairness, accuracy, good writing, and effective use of multimedia.
Juanita Millesse Memorial Award
(estimated at $275)
Award: To the student demonstrating academic proficiency and with proven financial need. Financial need is a significant criterion. Those whose personal circumstances have affected their academic performance are encouraged to apply.
Criteria:
- Applicants must be enrolled in the first year of the four-year program at the time of application;
- Students should submit what they consider to be their best written piece of work from first year;
- Students should submit a cover letter indicating their eligibility for this award;
- A financial statement is required. It is important to provide as much detail as possible on your financial need. The information will be seen only by faculty reviewing the applications and, in some cases, by those who sponsor the awards;
- NO APPLICATION will be accepted without completion of the budget form.
Loretta H. Yaskiel Memorial Award
($1,000)
Award: To a full-time undergraduate student in good standing who has demonstrated excellence in court reporting or writing on legal or justice issues.
Criteria:
- Full-time student enrolled in the second to fourth years of the BJ program;
- Student has demonstrated excellence in court reporting or writing on legal or justice issues through course work or published material;
- Student is in clear academic standing.
Application Package
- One sample of best work on legal or justice issues;
- Application Letter explaining how the student meets the criteria.
Lauder Internship Award
(Estimated at $1,000)
Award: Established out of the generosity of Scott Lauder who taught English literature to Ryerson Journalism students for more than three decades. The award helps cover expenses associated with an out-of-town internship course placement and is given to a student who might not otherwise be able to finance such a placement.
Application Deadline: throughout the year, when an out-of-town internship is sought or secured.
Time of Award: when the internship is secured or completed, as determined by the Awards Committee.
Criteria
To be eligible for this award, students must:
- Be full-time students in clear academic standing enrolled in the undergraduate Internship course and pursuing an out-of-town placement;
- Demonstrate financial need as determined by completion of the school’s Internship Budget Form;
- Demonstrate academic and professional merit in composition of the application letter and resume.

Marketwire Award
(estimated at $1,000)
Award: Students must be registered on a full-time basis in the third year of the four-year program at the time of the award presentation; have demonstrated academic excellence upon completion of second year and have made an outstanding contribution to university life.
Criteria:
- Applicants must be enrolled in the second or third year of the four-year program at the time of application;
- Students should submit a cover letter indicating their eligibility for this award;
- Students should submit what they consider to be their best written piece of work from second year.
Seymour Schulich Undergraduate Awards in Financial Journalism
Award: Inspired by his own experience as the student recipient of a generous scholarship, financier Seymour Schulich established this award in 2009. It is intended to allow a deserving final year BJourn student the time to study and explore and enrich his or her sense of the world.
Criteria: Applicants must:
- be full-time students enrolled in the third year of the Bachelor of Journalism program;
- have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 and clear academic standing;
- demonstrate eligibility through submission of the application package.
Application Package:
- Application Letter outlining interest and experience in financial journalism;
- Two or three samples of work completed in the area of financial journalism.
Toronto Sun Paul Rimstead Memorial Journalism Award
(estimated at $500)
Award: For overall academic excellence in second year and demonstrated financial need. The winner does not necessarily have to be the top student academically.
Criteria:
- Applicants must be enrolled in the second year of the four-year program at the time of application;
- Students should submit a cover letter detailing activities in which they have been involved on and off campus;
- Students should submit what they consider to be their best written piece of work from second year;
- A financial statement is required. It is important to provide as much detail as possible on your financial need. The information will be seen only by faculty reviewing the applications and, in some cases, by those who sponsor the award;
- NO APPLICATION will be accepted without completion of the budget form.
The VisionTV / Mr. Peter Flemington Scholarship for Excellence in Television Documentary Production
(estimated at $1,000)
Award: The scholarship is designed to encourage and aid talented and enthusiastic Canadians toward establishing or furthering a career in the Canadian broadcast industry. The scholarship will be presented to a student whose documentary work builds bridges of communication and understanding between people of different faiths or cultures.
Eligibility: The award is open to senior students (in their third year of the four year program) in the School of Journalism and the School of Radio and Television Arts. The award will be publicized in both Schools and the recipient will be chosen by a scholarship committee composed of the head of Broadcast Journalism (School of Journalism) and the head of Video and Television (School of Radio and Television Arts). Potential candidates may be asked to meet with representative of Vision TV at their offices.
Criteria:
The selected student must meet the following requirements:
- Officially registered in the 3rd year of the Journalism degree program or the Radio and Television Arts degree program with Television focus indicated for final year;
- Students' work should exhibit the following qualities: Outstanding creativity in a television documentary which builds bridges of communication and understanding between people of different faiths or cultures;
- Students must be in good academic standing and should not be failing or carrying any courses. The student must have a minimum GPA of 3.33 (B+);
- Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in Television.
