Biography:
Jagg Carr-Locke has had dual careers in journalism and education for more than 25 years. Following her first undergraduate degree from Montreal’s Concordia University, she worked as a reporter for CBC Radio in Montreal. In 1986 she moved to Toronto to take a job in the national radio newsroom as a writer, assignment editor, and line-up editor. She then made the move to television, working both for CBC Newsworld and The National. While television news was her main focus, she also worked as a daily producer for CBC Midday and at The Discovery Channel.
She came to Ryerson full-time in 2000 and has taught in the broadcast stream since then.
When she is not teaching, Jagg is working toward the completion of her doctoral dissertation, "Journalism and the state in Uganda: A tenuous relationship in a transitional democracy" (Political Science, University of Toronto). Completion spring 2009.
In recent years Jagg has travelled to Uganda to conduct research for periods ranging from two weeks to four months. She acted as an international observer during Uganda’s referendum on electoral change in July 2005, and during the presidential election of February 2006. She is affiliated with the Makerere Institute of Social Research, at Makerere University in Kampala, and with the Centre for Basic Research, also in Kampala. Her fieldwork is generously funded by the International Development Research Centre in Ottawa.
A secondary area of research interest is her ongoing collaborative work with Dr. Anthony Feinstein of the University of Toronto. Dr. Feinstein and Jagg co-authored the paper “Motivation, Risk-Taking and Front-Line Journalism: A Pilot Study.” Jagg presented the paper at the Third International Conference for New Directions in the Humanities, University of Cambridge, UK in August 2005. She and Dr. Feinstein are currently at work on a project examining the impact that being witness to scenes of violence has on subsequent reporting.
