Biographical Sketch:
Suanne Kelman worked for seven years as the arts producer on the CBC radio show Sunday Morning, creating her own documentaries, supervising arts coverage, eventually serving on the main current affairs desk, and coming up, week after week, with clues for the show's fiendish Headliner quiz.
In 1984, she joined The Journal and spent the next four years producing short television documentaries, booking interviews and panels, and starting the show's satire and commentary segments. She has written for Toronto Life, Toronto, Destinations, R.O.B. Magazine, Chatelaine, Shape and other magazines and newspapers. Before and after joining the School, she produced several documentaries for the CBC radio program Ideas. She is the only member of the School ever to have written a gossip column (“The Tatler,” for the Globe and Mail), and even she lasted only six months before resigning in a fit of self-disgust.
She is the author of All in the Family: A Cultural History of Family Life. She contributes regularly to the Literary Review of Canada, serves often as a judge for radio, television and writing awards, lectures on fiction to reading clubs and speaks on far too many panels.
Professor Kelman served as the school's interim chair during 2004 - 2005.
