K-Poets

About k-poets

This initiative.....

  • Gives children more access to poetry.

  • Provides resources to assist K-teachers with poetry in the curriculum.

  • Shows that K-children can improve their abilities in both reading and writing as well a speaking and listening.

  • Shows that K-teachers can build knowledge and skills in developing and implementing creative poetry activities within their literacy programme.

Starting fall 2004 and until May 2005, Professor Monique Richard of the School of Early Childhood Education will be conducting a research with Anthony Randall, teacher in the Kindergarten Room.

The purpose of this research is to explore teaching methods that are exemplary to help young children write poetry while they are learning the fundamentals of literacy such as letter knowledge, phonemic awareness and text comprehension.

Professor Richard and Anthony Randall, teacher-preceptor at the Ryerson Early Learning Centre will develop together direct, indirect and independent literacy activities, track children’s learning through direct observations and non-standard assessment methods which results will be provided to the parents if so desired.

In early spring 2005 we will have a Poetry Night which will provide you with an update of the project, display of children’s works, and display of poetry books.

Each child will have a poetry binder provided by the ELC in which every so often will be inserted poems written mostly by children. We hope that you will be able to read them to your child and assist him/her child to read it back to you. Some children might be able to write their own poems. Remember, at that age, correct spelling is not important.

This project will also provide us with the opportunity to improve the literacy component of our programme. Although we will follow the Ministry of Education guidelines, we will also implement research-based practices in order to align them with the course content of the program of the School of ECE.

The results of this research will be communicated to you through an information session. Professor Richard will publish an article in a professional magazine and will present a paper at a professional conference.

Also, the children’s works (writings and drawings) and photos of k-poets with no-name attached will be posted on this website.

The approval by the Ethics Review Board has been received.
