Technical Assistance at the Learning Commons

There are a wide range of IT resources available for the more than 140 computers at the Learning Commons. CCS install the software image on most of these computers, and the software available is similar to that in the general purpose computing lab at KHW71.

Lab Advisors

CCS recruits and trains student advisors to provide technical assistance to people in the Learning Commons. They are available at the main service desk at the Information & Learning Commons (on the main floor of the Library) from Monday to Friday during library hours (8 a.m. to midnight), and shorter hours on weekends.

Lab advisors:

  • provide basic application support, such as starting and quitting applications, printing, photocopying, and opening and saving data files
  • assist with account activation and re-setting passwords
  • provide "how-to" Blackboard assistance (including navigating online courses, using discussion boards, opening documents in Blackboard, and using Blackboard chat)
  • provide access assistance for Ryerson's wireless network
  • monitor the paper and toner usage, assist with stocking the copier and printer and clear paper jams

Please note that advisors are not expected to provide "how-to" assistance for every application. However, an advisor may provide some application support if they are familiar with it. Lab advisors won't answer questions regarding academic assignments -- please refer these to your instructor, teaching assistant or program office.
