Closed Caption Media
Ryerson University is committed to ensuring its media collection is accessible to patrons who require captioning or described video. Please view our Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities Policy.
For classroom viewing, faculty and staff are encouraged to select media that has accessible features like closed captioning.
Closed Captioned or Described Video in the Library Collections:
Accessible features such as closed caption or described video will be listed on the item record. If you are unsure if the DVD/video is captioned please contact the library’s Audio Visual department at extension 5099 or by email at: avbook@ryerson.ca.
Uncaptioned Videos
RULA can assist faculty and staff with the process of captioning an inaccessible DVD/video for classroom viewing.
Steps Involved.
- Please contact us as soon as possible:
Kraigen Brown. Ext 6653, kraigen.brown@ryerson.ca
And/Or
Kelly Dermody. Ext 4120, kdermody@ryerson.ca
- Faculty and Staff must allow at least 6-8 weeks for media to be captioned.
- Before the captioning process can take place, the library must receive permission from the media’s producer. This can take 1-3 weeks.
- The library will send a copy of the video to the captioning producer. A script will be provided.
- Due to the long time lines, faculty/staff should consult with either the Librarian for Services for Persons with Disabilities or the Access Center on alternative solutions like using a similar video that is captioned or negotiating an alternative classroom accommodation.
- The library will contact the faculty/staff member as soon as the media is available from the producer.
- Faculty/staff must book the video for classroom viewing by filling out the on-line AV booking form or by email at: avbook@ryerson.ca
