Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Policies
(Inquiries: 2nd Floor, 416-979-5314)
Who can use RACER?
The service is available to Ryerson faculty members, students
and staff with a valid library card. This service is not extended
to Direct Borrowers, Alumni and External borrowers.
Check Ryerson Library Resources First!
Please check the Library
Catalogue and the Full-Text
Periodical Titles List before submitting an Interlibrary
Loan request. For assistance in using the Library catalogue
or Full-Text Periodical Titles List, please ask at the Reference
desk (416-979-5055).
Materials not available
on Interlibrary Loan
Books that are held by the Ryerson Library, even if currently
in use, cannot be requested through ILL.
Other items that cannot
be borrowed include reference materials, patents and standards,
maps, vertical file items, computer disks or CDROMS and entire
issues of magazines and periodicals. AV materials (films, videos,
etc.) are borrowed through the Audio Visual Services located
near ILL area on the 2nd floor.
Cost of Interlibrary
Loan
The Interlibrary Loan
service is available free of charge to Ryerson faculty, students
and staff. The Library has to pay for borrowing charges from
other institutions. Fees for book loans or photocopies of periodical
articles range from $5 Can. to $25 U.S., depending on the lending
library charges.
Requesting a Loan
RACER is the Interlibrary
loan requesting system. If you have never used RACER before,
then you first register (one time only). Please complete one
form for each item. Phone number and e-mail address are required.
The Library will process only 10 requests from the same user
per week.
Do not send a list of
titles by e-mail. Requests incompatible with our ILL management
system will not be processed.
All materials requested
are subject to conditions specified in copyright regulations
and licensing agreements with publishers. Single reprographic
(paper and non-electronic) copies of less than a substantial
part of any copyrighted material are to be used solely in support
of private study (or criticism or review) and research within
Ryerson, and not for personal activities or other research.
ILL reserves the right
to refuse to process a request if it violates any of the above
conditions.
Planning your Requests
The time for materials
to arrive may vary, depending on the availability, location and
delivery mechanism of the lending library.
Journal articles:
a few working days to two weeks.
Books: a week
or more.
International requests
may take longer.
Please submit your requests
well in advance and request only materials
needed for research.
Notification and Pick-up
Patrons will be telephoned
or e-mailed when their materials have arrived. Items must be
picked up at the Circulation desk, Library 2nd floor. Faculty
has the option of requesting delivery of photocopies of articles
to their offices via campus mail. Please specify room number
if doing so.
Return of Interlibrary
loan materials
Please return all Interlibrary
loan material to the Circulation desk (NOT the
book drop)
and by the due date. Loan periods are generally 2 weeks. Renewal
is not possible and fines and/or suspension of interlibrary loan privileges are applicable if items are returned after their due date.
Document Delivery
Interlibrary Loan is
a mediated service. Document Delivery is unmediated in
that you can place a request directly from your desktop to the
document supplier at your convenience. The turnaround time is
usually within 48 hours.
CISTI Source (unavailable after August 31)
CISTI Source will no longer be available after August 31. The NRC's CISTI Discover is a new service for finding articles. Discover puts millions of peer-reviewed scientific, technical, medical and some business journal articles at your fingertips. Discover also offers clients the ability to create alerts.
Searching Discover is free but you will incur credit card charges if you order items directly from Discover. Ryerson University Library does not pay these direct credit card charges. To avoid these credit card charges, search for free on Discover and then, from your search results, request items Ryerson does not own by using RACER, our interlibrary loan service. RACER is available to Ryerson students, faculty and staff with a valid library account.
