Donations (Gifts in Kind)

The Ryerson University Library and Archives welcomes donations of books, periodicals, archival and other materials from faculty, students, and the general public.  All donations must be in accordance with the university’s Coordination of Donation Appeals and Gift Acceptance Policy

Donations should be:

  • clean, unmarked and in good repair
  • relevant to the current and future teaching and research activities of our users
  • free of licensing, copyright or other restrictions (for example, videorecordings/dvds must be covered for public performance rights at Ryerson)

The library cannot accept the following:

  • duplicates unless they are copies of items in high demand
  • materials in poor condition
  • superseded editions of textbooks
  • photocopies
  • newspapers
  • single issues of journals/periodicals unless they fill a gap in our collection
  • sheet music, lps, sound cassettes, and other out-dated audio-visual materials
  • material published in languages other than English, French and Spanish unless chiefly pictorial in nature

Donors who wish to receive a tax receipt (offered for the fair market value of only the materials added to the collection), are required to provide a list giving:

  • author
  • title
  • publisher
  • publication date

Donations of collections valued at less than $1,000 (only 1 donation will be accepted in a given year) may be appraised by experienced library staff.  In accordance with Canada Revenue Agency requirements, collections valued at more than $1,000 must be assessed by an independent appraiser, the cost of which will be covered by the donor.

If the donation is accepted, the donor is required to sign a Gift In Kind Form that will be supplied by the library.

The library will accept only unconditional donations. We reserve the right to retain or dispose of donated material according to the needs of the University.  Once offered and accepted, donations become the property of the Library and cannot be returned to the donor.  Accepted materials will be integrated with the rest of the Library collection.  Please be aware that by accepting donations in kind, the library will invest the staff time required to catalogue, process and make items available, but due to cataloguing priorities, donated titles may take a while to be added to the collection.
