Periodicals

Retention Policies

Holdings for active titles are retained indefinitely; some on the fifth floor of the library , others in Closed Stacks . If there is also an active microfiche/film subscription and the periodical does not contain illustrations or graphics, the hard copy issues will be retained for five years only.

Titles that have ceased publication or have been cancelled will be kept as long as they continue support the curriculum.

Closed Stacks

Old periodicals which still have some value to the periodical collection are relegated to the Closed Stacks

Microforms

High risk, heavily used titles are purchased in either microfilm or microfiche as funds permit.

Acquisition / Cancellation

Periodical subscriptions are reviewed regularly. Proposed cancellations or new acquisitions are evaluated by a committee of the librarians in consultation with faculty. To ensure that the periodicals budget will not absorb the whole acquisitions budget, new titles may be ordered only if a sufficient dollar value of old titles have been cancelled.

Binding

Selected periodicals which have enduring value, are not received in microform are sent to a commercial bindery twice yearly. Completed volumes are sent in December after classes end and after June 1.
