Having staff or security ban people who puts on loud music or make continuous noise. I realize that there isn't staff on 3rd floor to attend to people making noise in the computer area, but so often there is way too much noise in the 2nd computer lab and the noise is obvious even at the Help desk, yet nobody from the desk gets up to get people to be quiet.
Reply:
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We realize that the noise level can be unacceptable for some users in the computer labs. If computer users are unable to use headphones, then sound must be turned off, even in the commons. Have you tried asking Help Desk staff to ask users to turn off loud music? While it may be obvious to others, as staff, we become accustomed to a certain amount of noise in the commons on a daily basis, and we may not hear the same level of noise that you do. We are happy to ask users to keep the noise to a tolerable level, and to alert security, should the situation escalate. Finally, given that neither the commons nor the third floor are designated quiet areas, users should expect a certain level of noise. If you need a quiet computer lab, there is space available on the sixth floor in LIB667A. Thanks for your comments. I hope this helps, but please do not hesitate to contact me if you have further questions or the situation continues.

Hello, I am writing this regarding the seating on the library floor. I came to study this morning around 9 am, there werent many students studying on the tenth floor. But there was not many place to sit since people reserve the cubicles by leaving their notes and library books spread in the cubicle. I even noticed that a man who was sitting in the corner of the tenth floor reserved the corner seat for himself. Even if he is gone for the day from library his stuff is at the corner cubicle of tenth floor (I have seen him do this for more than a year now). And today when my friend left library after studying... the same man got up from his corner seat and spread notes and book on the cubicle next to me even though he reserved a seat in the corner. All the corner seats were taken and to make the matter worse, these people show up to their reserved seat around 2-3 pm. I request the authorities to take actions on this matter. These people should not be allowed to reserve these seats by leaving their jackets and notes behind. I really hope that action will be taken soon since it is an exam time, I see lot of people hunting for seats while there are seats that are reserved by people who show up at their own convenience. Thank you.

Thanks for your comments. I apologize that it has been difficult for you to find study space in the library and agree that it is inconsiderate for people to leave their belongings in areas they are not using. I know that many students simply move unattended belongings and take the unoccupied space. I am not necessarily suggesting that you do this, but others have done it in the past.
In the meantime, we are happy to announce the availability of additional silent study space during exams. Thanks to student feedback and the help of Student Services in the Ted Rogers School of Management, silent study space will be available from *April 16 - 27 (excluding the 21st) in rooms TRS 2-119 and TRS 2-129 from 8am - 6pm*. The Ryerson Commerce Society will be monitoring the space during the above hours. We hope that this will alleviate some of the space concerns during the busy exam period.
While you are using the library (not the temporary study space in the TRSM), you can contact us in the event of study distractions and unattended belongings. If you are unable to come to the reference desk on the main floor, please call us at (416) 979 5055 (option 3) or use our chat service to let us know about any disruptions: http://www.ryerson.ca/library/info/hours.html. Do not hesitate to get in contact with me if you have further questions or suggestions. Thanks again for your comments.

I borrowed 10 books for my research paper. I lost the paper and lost track of when I had to renew. Unfortunately I owe now $25. I wish that library system automatically send a reminder for renewal of books.

The second notice repeats the message the day before the due date.

The temperature in the computer common area on the main floor of the library is uncomfortably warm. Can it be made cooler?
Reply:
Thank you for taking the time to let us know about the temperature in the Information and Learning Commons. Unfortunately, we are already doing everything we can to regulate the temperature. The building has a very old HVAC system that we are unable to update. Paired with the warm temperatures outside, we realize that the library has been very warm as of late. In addition, the Information and Learning Commons area will always be warmer, due to a high traffic volume and the heat emitted from the 100+ workstations there, both of which are beyond our control. We ask that students dress in layers and stay hydrated. Thanks again for your comments and do not hesitate to contact me if you have further questions.

The library service at Ryerson University is wonderful and a great place to study. However, it lacks in cleanliness. I have provided a list of the issues I find distributing. List of items: -the computers are dirty with food crumbs all over -the cubicles are filthy, usually clean it myself -the carpet is dirty and not vacuumed, food crumbs everywhere.
Reply:
Thanks for your feedback on this. At student request, we have allowed food and drink in the library. You can view our policy here: http://www.ryerson.ca/library/info/policies/food.html. It is unfortunate that our users are not cleaning up after themselves and I apologize for any inconvenience it has caused you. Campus Planning and Sustainability maintain a regular cleaning schedule in the library; however, I have brought this to their attention so they can attend to the particular items you reported. Please continue to report similar incidents of uncleanliness so that we can communicate with Campus Planning and Sustainability to resolve the issue(s) quickly. Do not hesitate to contact me if you wish to discuss this further. I hope this helps.

Could you please purchase at least one current copy of text required for each course in the post RN degree completion for circulation? At least for references if not for circulation. Please keep up with the changes of required reading. At present you have numerous outdated material.
Reply:
Due to space and budget constraints, the library rarely purchases textbooks. It is the student's responsibility to acquire their own textbooks through the bookstore or other means. Please see our Collections policy about textbooks here: http://www.ryerson.ca/library/info/collections/colldev/material.html. If you are concerned about the lack of availability of your textbooks, you may wish to speak to your professor about the possibility of putting a personal copy on reserve for students and to ensure the availability of all required readings at the library. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have further questions or comments.

The computer need to be updated more regularly to minimize interference of automatic update features and plug ins required for some courses such as java on all the browsers in the computers.
Reply:
The library's computers are frequently updated with the necessary plug-ins and updates to run programs. We realize that some applications may take longer than others to load, such as the Virtual Applications program. However, this is not a problem with the library's computers. Also be sure to pay attention to a site's recommendations for which browser to use for optimal viewing. Thanks for your comment. Please do not hesitate to get in contact with me if you have further questions or comments.

I was just wondering what your policy for food and drinks in the library was. I saw on the website that you are allowed cold, finger foods & bagged lunches in the library, except in Archives and Special Collections. Where are these areas located, as in which floors are we NOT allowed to eat on?
Reply:
Yes, you are allowed to consume the food items you cited in the library. We ask that users not bring in foods that emit a lot of odour, as others may find them distracting or have allergies. The Archives and Special Collections are located on the third and fourth floors, respectively, where you are not allowed food or beverages. As a courtesy to those looking for silent study, we also ask that you not eat on the 10th floor. However, hot and cold beverages are still allowed up there. Thanks for taking the time to write and do not hesitate to get in contact with me if you have further questions about the food and drink policy.
