Research Skills Workshops - Winter 2012

Knowing how to find information efficiently, use it effectively, and evaluate the quality of the information is a major key to success in your university courses--and later in your chosen career. We’ll show you how through the following sessions.
All workshops are free but you do need to register for each workshop.

1.  Navigating the Library's Electronic Resources

Learn how to use the Library’s extensive collection of electronic databases to find the best, most scholarly, and most relevant information available. This is the type of information your professors want you to use in your assignments and essays. Instruction will be given in searching for and retrieving full-text journal articles. The differences between freely-available Internet-based resources and scholarly sources of information will be discussed. 50 minutes

2. Cite it Right:  Creating Bibliographies with RefWorks

NOTE:  RefWorks 2.0 has replaced the previous version of RefWorks. This workshop will cover the RefWorks 2.0 only. 

RefWorks is a web-based citation manager that is used to collect, save and organize bibliographic references to journal articles, books, web sites and other sources. RefWorks also assists in ensuring references are cited correctly in accordance with commonly used citation styles, including APA and MLA. This workshop will demonstrate the effective use of RefWorks to export references, create citations and format bibliographies. NOTE: It is recommended that you attend the Navigating the Library’s Electronic Resources session (above) before attending the RefWorks session. 50 minutes

3. Advanced RefWorks -

NOTE:  RefWorks 2.0 has replaced the previous version of RefWorks. This workshop will cover RefWorks 2.0 only.  You must take the Cite it Right:  Creating Bibliographies with RefWorks 2.0 before attending this workshop.

Learn how to make the most out of RefWorks to organize your research, cite your sources and create bibliographies. Topics include customizing your account, sharing your RefWorks references, editing output styles to meet publication requirements, advanced RefWorks searching, and creating and storing RSS feeds.

4. Statistics Canada 101: An Overview of Resources

"I need some data from Statistics Canada on for my research."  Does this sound like a familiar question? 
In this workshop we will demonstrate various Statistics Canada resources that are available to the Library including the Statistics Canada homepage, E-Stat, and ODESI.  We will also provide practical information on how to evaluate, access, and download data from Statistics Canada.
