Artistic Lives

  • Artists' Biographies
    One of the most comprehensive sites for information about painters, sculptors, photographers, architects, designers and other artists. Of the more than 16,000 biographies lists, some 15,000 are derived from articles in The Grove Dictionary of Art.

    There are two primary search options; biographies of 20th century and contemporary visual artists from an alphabetical list or artist's name from a list organized by art movement, style or medium.
  • Union List of Artist Names (ULAN)
    ULAN is a structured vocabulary "that contains around 220,000 names and other information about artists". The scope is global and the periods covered are from antiquity to the present.

Entertainment/Media Lives

  • All Media Guide
    This site provides information on all types of musicians, with biographical details presented in six languages, information on recordings, tours and history, listings and links to major influences, and a summary of the artist's/group's achievements.

  • Internet Movie Database (IMDb)
    Allows searching of anyone involved with filmmaking.
  • PBS Jazz
    Nearly 100 famous jazz musicians are profiled at this site. Audio samples of the artists' work are included.
  • Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
    Information on rock stars inducted in to Hall of Fame can be searched by name or induction year.
  • What a Character!.com
    Provides biographical information on hundreds of character actors and allows searching by an alphabetical index.

General Lives

  • Biographical Dictionary
    Covering more than 28,000 notable men and women who have shaped our world from ancient times to the present day, this dictionary can be searched by birth years, death years, positions held, professions, literary and artistic works, achievements, and other keywords.
  • Biography.com
    Includes over 25,000 entries on notable personalities, past and present.
  • Dictionary of New Zealand Biography
    Contains over 3,000 biographies of New Zealanders. The site includes the collected biographies originally published in the printed Dictionary of New Zealand Biography series between 1990 and 2000. It does not include people who are alive.
  • Freeality
    This site offers users a variety of sources for searching online bibliographies.
  • Lives, the Biography Resource
    Provides links to biography sites on the WEB for famous individuals who are no longer living. Links to thousands of biographies, autobiographies, memoirs, diaries, letters, narratives, oral histories and more.
  • Well Known People Who Happen to be Canadian
    Provides links to sites on Canadian celebrities, artists, writers, politicians, business people, scientists and more.
  • World Biographical Index
    Contains over 3.1 million short biographical entries for eminent individuals, worldwide. Searches can be limited by occupation, year of birth or death and other criteria.
  • Yahoo: People
    There is a general list of categories followed by site listings.

  • Supreme Court Justices
    This site offers comprehensive biographical information on every U.S. Supreme Court justice.

Literary Lives

  • Biographies: The Poets
    A general utility site, the list of poets of brief and focused on British writers from the 17th through the 19th centuries. It includes related web links.
  • Book Lovers-Great Writers
    Personal web page states that the writers listed have achieved "world literature level" and they have at least one "significant" web page devoted to them.
  • Literary Index
    Find which Gale literature series include entries on an author, search for the title of a literary work to see who wrote it and/or where it's discussed in Gale's literature criticism series. You may also look for authors in the Index by name, birth date, death date, or nationality.

Philosophical Lives

  • Major World Philosophers
    This site provides concise descriptions of the philosopher's origins, major field of investigation, accomplishments and achievements.
  • Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
    These biographical entries contain lengthy explanations of the philosopher's areas of inquiry, bibliographies and links to related sites.

Political Lives

  • Biographical Directory of the U.S. Congress
    This site offers a brief summary of the historical highlights of the members of Congress from 1774 onwards.
  • Political Graveyard
    This site reveals where dead politicians are buried and also provides basic biographical information on tens of thousands of politicians, including dates of birth and death (if applicable), political position held, relationship to other political figures, and numerous links to other pertinent information.
  • POTUS: Presidents of the U.S.
    This site contains background information, election results, cabinet members, notable events, and some points of interest on each of the presidents. Links to biographies, historical documents, audio and video files, and other presidential sites are also included.

Scientific Lives

  • African-Americans in the Sciences
    Profiled here are African American men and women who have contributed to the advancement of science and engineering.
  • Anthropology Biography Web
    Brief descriptions of anthropologists and other scientists that have direct influence on the discipline of anthropology.
  • Biographies of Biologists
    A BIOSIS resource guide, the entries listed are selectively chosen from other online sites and organized alphabetically.
  • Mathematicians
    Most biographies provide a portrait, list of references, a link to other mathematicians born in the same country and other useful links.
  • National Inventors Hall of Fame
    Each inventor is an inductee and each biography lists the date of induction, the notable works and patent number(s). There are also links to other sites.

Womens' Lives

  • 4000 Years of Women in Science
    An alphabetical list of brief biographies.
  • Distinguished Women of Past & Present
    This site, created and maintained by D. Bois, has biographies of women who contributed to culture in many different ways. There are writers, educators, scientists, heads of state, politicians, civil rights crusaders, artists, entertainers, and others. Some were alive hundreds of years ago and some are living today.
  • Voices From the Gaps: Women Writers of Color
    Hosted by the University of Minnesota, this instructional site focuses on the lives and works of North American women writers of color.
  • Women's Legal History Biography Project
    Developed for a Stanford course on Women's Legal History, these biographies on women in the field of law were written by students.
