Laptop Lending Policy
All laptop users are expected to abide by the University’s Computer Use Policy, and the Library Code of Conduct
Liability
The user agrees to assume any and all legal liability for the cost of repair or replacement in the event of loss due to theft, damage, negligence or misuse. The Library will not assume responsibility for lost files due to viruses, hardware failure and network interruptions. Any file(s) copied or downloaded will be automatically removed and cannot be recovered after reboot/restart.
Eligibility
All Ryerson University students, both part-time and full-time, Faculty, Staff, and Continuing Education students with a valid library card may borrow a laptop. Users must also be in good standing with the Library, i.e. no outstanding fines or liabilities over $20. Continuing Education students and any other students without a Ryerson One Card will be asked to present a piece of photo ID (government-issued photo ID. e.g., a driver's license or OHIP card) with their library card.
Limits
Eligible patrons are permitted to borrow one laptop at a time.
Availability
Laptops are available for loan on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Circulation Desk. Loan Period: The loan period for laptops is four hours. Laptops may be borrowed for use outside of the Library, but may not be signed out on an overnight basis. Laptops are due thirty minutes prior to the Library’s closing time.
Laptop Agreement Form
When first-time users sign out a laptop, they will be required to read and sign a “Ryerson University Library Laptop Agreement form.” The form will be kept on file for future reference as required.
Renewals
Laptops may be borrowed for up to four hours at a time. At the end of the loan period, the patron must bring the laptop back to the Circulation Desk in person. Patrons will be permitted to re-check out the same laptop (a maximum of one time) if there are no other patrons waiting for a laptop. Patrons will have to inquire with circulation staff.
Advance Booking
Holds or advance bookings are not available.
Fines
Overdue fines of $20 per hour (or each part thereof, with a $500 maximum) will commence at the due time. In other words, fines for a full hour apply even when the laptop is less than one hour late. Borrowing privileges will also be suspended for late return.
Replacement and Damage Fines
The user assumes full financial responsibility. The replacement charge for a laptop is $1,500, in addition to a processing charge of $20. Charges for missing laptop accessories also apply - $50 for carrying case; $65 for AC-adaptor plus the cost of nine cell batteries, and overdue fines. The suspension of borrowing privileges will also apply. A repair fee will be levied for damaged laptops. Any laptop equipment malfunctions should be reported immediately to Library staff.
Returns
Laptop computers must be returned in-person to staff at the Circulation Desk. Users will be required to wait momentarily so staff can verify that all laptop accessories have been returned.
