Human Resources Management Research Guide
Introduction
This web page highlights
a selection of print and electronic resources available through
the Ryerson Library
that can be used to undertake research on topics related to human
resources management. Many of these resources can be accessed via
computers in the Ryerson Library and in computer labs on the Ryerson
campus. If you are a Ryerson student, staff or faculty member, access
is also available through home or office computer systems that are
connected to the Internet. For further information on connecting
to Library resources from a home system, consult the
Remote Access instructions on the Library's home page.
Books
In general, related books can be found
on the 7th floor of the library:
Human Resources: HF5548.8
- HF5549.5
Labour: HD4801 - HD8943
To identify books on your topic in the
Library Catalogue, use
the "keywords" option. Enter keywords such as "personnel management"
or "employee benefits". You may want to use Boolean
Searching techniques to make your search more efficient.
For example:
Topic: how to motivate employees
Strategy: motivat* and employee*
Using "and" will find every item in the
catalogue that has both the words "motivation" and "employee"
in it. The asterisk (*) acts like a wild card to find different endings.
"motivat*" will find "motivation", "motivate", and "motivating".
"Employee*" will find both singular and plural, i.e., "employee" and
"employees."
Please note that the term "personnel
management" is more effective in searching our catalogue than "human
resources".
Videos
All videos are listed in the library
catalogue. Search by keyword as follows. Example:
teamwork and videorecording
You can also limit your search to videos,
or other types of av material, by choosing the "Limit this search"
option at the top of the screen. Then select material type, and choose
the desired format. For further information, contact Audio-Visual
Services.
Dictionaries and Encyclopedias
Dictionaries, encyclopedias and other
reference works are mainly held in the Reference section on the 2nd
floor, or in the stacks.
Periodicals Collection
Ryerson provides access to a broad range
of journals and other periodicals in print and electronic formats.
Journals by Title A-Z is a complete list of both print and electronic titles
available, with the exception of periodicals on microfiche or Lexis-Nexis.
The print collection is on the 5th floor. Full-text periodicals can
be accessed through the library home page.
Finding Journal Articles
To identify articles on your topic,
you will need to search an index or full-text database. A list of
the most important indexes and databases relevant to Human Resources
Management follows. For further useful databases, consult our Find an Index/Database by Title, or Find an Index/Databases
by Subject, particularly the Business, Social Science,
News and Multidisciplinary sections. To connect from home, consult
the instructions on Remote Access to Articles & Indexes. You may want to use
Boolean searching to search these databases effectively.
