Awards 2009 - 2010

History of Teaching Awards at Ryerson

Recognizing teaching excellence at the university-level at Ryerson goes back over a decade. In the mid-nineties, a Grass-roots ad-hoc committee of interested faculty members formed, under the name Group to Renew and Enhance Effective Teaching (GREET). One of the most important tasks of the GREET was organizing GREET Faculty Awards. Up to six faculty members, one for each of the six Ryerson Faculties, were recognized each year. In total, between 1995 and 2005, 55 GREET Awards were given.

Initiated by Dr. Michael Dewson, Vice Provost, Faculty Affairs, the Learning and Teaching Office (LTO) at Ryerson underwent an institutional review of its operations in 2003-2004. Among the recommendations in the final report of the Review Committee, were two items relevant to the awards process. First, the report recommended that the GREET Committee be disbanded, as the formal structures of the LTO and its Faculty Associates took over all processes initiated by the GREET and second, that the awards process be revised, with a view to increase visibility, breadth and status of the awards.

In 2007, further enhancements to the existing Teaching Award Program were introduced, as one way to support the idea that Teaching is Valued at Ryerson, a message that has a long-term goal of enhancing the teaching and learning environment and improving the student experience at Ryerson. In total, seventeen (17) University teaching awards are available to faculty, as listed below.

As well the Faculty of Community Services and the faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Science sponsor their own teaching awards.
