External Teaching Awards

There are several external teaching excellence awards for which faculty members teaching at Ryerson can be nominated:

 

International Teaching Awards

Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Technology

This award, given at an annual International Conference on Teaching and Learning, is sponsored by The Center for the Advancement of Teaching & Learning at the Florida Community College at Jacksonville. The conference emphasizes the use of innovative strategies, such as interactive and cooperative learning, combined with the use of technology to support learning in higher education. Each college or university participating in the conference can nominate one full-time teaching faculty member who has contributed in the most highly creative ways to teaching, learning and technology. Candidates are selected based on an institution-wide search, using the institution's own criteria.

  • Ryerson Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Technology recipient: Frankie Stewart (2006)
  • Ryerson Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Technology recipient: Gosha Zywno (2004)

Ernest L. Boyer International Award for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Technology

This award is also given at the annual International Conference on Teaching and Learning and sponsored by The Center for the Advancement of Teaching & Learning at at the Florida Community College at Jacksonville. Each institution participating in that conference may also elect to have its candidate for the Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology considered for the Boyer International Award. The recipient, selected by an international committee and honored at the awards ceremony during the conference, receives a trophy and a $5,000 (US) cash award.

National Teaching Awards

3M National Teaching Fellowships

The 3M National Teaching Fellowships Program, created in 1986 by the STLHE (Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education) and 3M Canada, is the only national award that recognizes teaching excellence and educational leadership at Canadian Universities. The Fellowships are open to all of more than 40,000 Canadian university educators, regardless of discipline or level of appointment. The award recipients are announced at the annual STLHE conference in June.

Please note: Anyone planning to submit a nomination for the 3M Fellowship should advise the LTO of the intention to do so - please email the LTO Awards Program Coordinator Debbie Chant at dchant@ryerson.ca - if you also would like to receive feedback on your nomination, please contact Debbie before November 1, 2009. Your nomination will be reviewed and discussed with you prior to the 2010 3M National Teaching Fellowships nomination deadline (August 31, 2010). Dossiers should be submitted electronically on or before August 31, 2010. In an effort to decrease our environmental footprint, hard copies will not longer be accepted.

The Alan Blizzard Award

The Alan Blizzard Award was established to encourage, identify, and publicly recognize those whose exemplary collaboration in university teaching enhances student learning. The Award honours Dr. Alan Blizzard, STLHE President from 1987 to 1995, and his convictions about the effectiveness of collaboration in team teaching for student learning. From the beginning in 2000, the Award has been sponsored by McGraw-Hill Ryerson. The Award seeks to make visible and disseminate scholarship of teaching and learning, based on values and practices of collaborative teaching.

  • Ryerson Alan Blizzard Award nominees: Ryerson Interdisciplinary Charrette team (2006)

National Technology Innovation Awards (NTIA)

The National Technology Innovation Awards (NTIA) was established in 2003 by the Learning Partnership to honour the achievements of educators who use technology to enhance the learning environment for their students. NTIA offers the opportunity for educators to share best practices, and provide tips on how to replicate the extraordinary projects in all schools, while creating a network of leading edge thinkers who set the standard for our educational system.

  • Ryerson National Technology Innovation Award recipient: Gosha Zywno (2004)

Excellence in Education Award for Promotion of Sustainable Practices

This award, from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), honours outstanding educational contribution to sustainable practices in the fields of architecture, planning, landscape architecture, urban design, geography, engineering, and environmental studies. It recognizes educators who have integrated sustainable concepts in housing and community development into the academic curriculum. The award is intended to recognize and support higher standards in sustainable education and to highlight the importance of sustainable practices within communities.

Provincial Teaching Awards

OCUFA Teaching and Academic Librarianship Awards

Each year OCUFA recognizes outstanding teachers and academic librarians in Ontario universities through its Teaching and Academic Librarianship Awards. Since 1973 OCUFA has presented 359 awards. The recipients are selected by the OCUFA Teaching and Academic Librarianship Awards Committee. Approximately 7 awards are presented every year.

  • Ryerson OCUFA Teaching Award Recipients: R. Maher (1973), Gosha Zywno (2002)
  • Ryerson OCUFA Librarian Recipients: Suzette Giles (2006), Catherine Matthews (1994) - received the award while at the University of Toronto

Ontario Government's Leadership in Faculty Teaching (LIFT) Award

The LIFT Award was developed to recognize and encourage teaching excellence at Ontario's colleges and universities. This award has been given out to faculty who influence, motivate and inspire students and demonstrate leadership in teaching methods for the diverse student body in Ontario. Winners received $20,000 over two years to encourage continued excellence in the classroom setting.

COU Award for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching with Technology

The award, formerly known as the Office for Partnerships for Advanced Skills (OPAS) Award for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching with Technology, was sponsored by the Council of Ontario Universities (COU), in two categories: University Program/Course/Module and Workplace Learning Module.
