Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Science

FEAS Teaching Excellence Awards were initiated in 2003 and are awarded annually, in two categories: Tenured Faculty and Non-Tenured Faculty. There may be more than one winner in each category, depending on the quality of candidates. In 2003 there were three recipients, in 2004, two, and in 2005, four recipients. Each award, regardless of the number of recipients, is $2,500. A faculty member can be a recipient of the FEAS award only once. Candidates can be nominated by a fellow FEAS faculty member or a FEAS student, or they can directly apply themselves.

Terms of reference for the award are demonstrated evidence of outstanding and exceptional performance in one or more of the following areas:

  • Mastery of subject matter
  • Effectiveness in the classroom, laboratory or studios
  • Innovation in more effective teaching methodologies
  • Leadership in the various facets of curriculum development
  • Capacity as a role for students and faculty

The Selection Committee reviews the following supporting documentation of each Direct Applicant/Nominee:

  • Teaching evaluation of the two previous semesters by students and colleagues
  • The Annual reports of the year of the nomination/application and the previous year’s
  • Reference/Testimonial letters explaining why the Direct Applicant/Nominee is an excellent teacher. References must also address the Direct Applicant’s/Nominee’s teaching ability, effectiveness and ability to interact and motivate students
  • Statement of teaching philosophy
  • Curriculum development activities
  • Any other relevant information
