In2 the Cloud: Teaching with Technology and Web 2.0 Tools in an Online Teaching Environment Workshop Series

Promoting student engagement is key when teaching online. One way to ensure effective interactions among students, course content, and the instructor is through the use of a variety of activities. Technology offers an enhanced learning experience, enables collaboration among students, and engages them in a meaningful learning experience. This program is developed and facilitated by the LTO and the DMP and provides the pedagogical backing for the use of these tools in the online environment. Additionally, participants will explore and practice the use of these tools through hands-on activities.

Instructors who complete any five of these workshops will receive a recognition of completion certificate in "Basics of Online Teaching and Learning."

Collaboration Tools:

Blogs and Wikis

In this workshop we look at how blogs and wikis are used in online courses. These tools can be used to support collaborative group work and project-based learning. We will highlight several innovative users of these tools and hear from a Ryerson faculty member(s) who utilized the tools in their classroom instruction. The hands on activities will include starting a blog and a wiki using Ryerson's multi-site installation of WordPress.

Online Facilitation Strategies: Discussion boards and audio comments

To create an effective learning experience that challenges and engages students, instructors should utilize a variety of communication tools. Online discussions create meaningful and social environments, which promote students’ interactions with the content, their peers, and their instructor. Additionally, voice comments can add a personal aspect to online communication. In this workshop, we will explore the use of the discussion board tool in Blackboard and audio comments using VoiceThread, and provide you with effective communication strategies to keep your students engaged throughout your course.

Online Videos

This workshop will review several tools that you can use to create and share audio and video files, as well as ways in which online audio and video can be used to enhance your teaching. In addition, we will look at tools available at the DMP like Camtasia and Adobe Captivate. Hands-on exercises will focus on how to embed video and audio content in your course and how to create an online tutorial to answer your students' common questions about navigating the course site.

Online Course Design: Converting from in-class to online environments

Converting your course from the traditional face-to-face format to the online environment requires more than simply putting your course content into Blackboard. Web-based education provides learners with different learning strategies than the ones used in class, and should be customized to create individualized learning experiences. In this session we will explore basic steps and considerations for converting your course to the digital world while maintaining a high quality learning experience.
