Tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hello. My name is Jay. I’m married, have 2 wonderful children and a mortgage. I am going into my 2nd year as a mechanical engineer. My first experience as post-secondary education started at the university of Waterloo, where I ended up with a honors Science diploma. Since that time, I’ve worked as an environmental consultant for 2 years, taught high school chemistry for 2 years, and even had my own education consulting business for 2 years. I will be turning 31 this November.
What specifically motivated you to choose a university education? (i.e. your hopes, expectations, goals, career aspirations).
From my vast work experience, I realize that, to be able to equip myself for the on going challenges and demands of the ever evolving work force, I needed to re-train myself and teach myself new knowledge, in order to stay competitive in the open job market. Coming to Ryerson gave me that chance to better myself in my inner values and my capabilities. I want to be able to apply for a graduate school and then eventually finish post doctorial degree and be able to continue to help students in the post secondary school environment.
What, if any, challenges have you faced as a mature student? What’s helped you to succeed?
My biggest concern of coming back to school and to start all over was the fear of being isolated. Here I was in my early 30’s having to compete with fresh out of high school students. But as I got to know the students better, I began realizing that I wasn’t the only “mature” student around. I found inspirations in other mature students who was doing exactly what I was doing. Meeting new people and getting involved in Ryerson community by both volunteering and working has made me realize all the resources and potentials this community had to offer.
What message or advice do you have for prospective and current mature students?
I know that some of you may be in similar situation as I am. Time is a commodity we no longer have abundance of. However, I realize that in order for you to get the most out of the school, I highly recommend getting involved in the school community. Join a club, volunteer at the student services, attend workshops and meet new people. Increase your connection and networkability.

Tell us a little bit about yourself?
My Name is Matt, I attend Ryerson University. I am studying mechanical engineering and entering my second year. I have two previous college diplomas, one from Georgian college and one from Sheridan College. Both of these diplomas were different levels of a mechanical engineering technician. My previous career was that of a tool and die maker. As a toolmaker, I built automotive tooling for several different manufacturers.
What specifically motivated you to choose a university education? (i.e. your hopes, expectations, goals, career aspirations).
My career options motivated me to return to school. Eventually holding two different licenses in engineering will greatly help me to succeed in industry.
What, if any, challenges have you faced as a mature student? What’s helped you to succeed?
Money is the main challenge of a mature student, ones life gets put on hold while the bills keep pilling up. On top of the increased cost of post secondary. A good group of people to study with greatly helps the adjustment period and helps give a sense of purpose.
What message or advice do you have for prospective and current mature students?
Advice is difficult to give as each individual has there own set of challenges and motivations for returning to school. One solid piece of advice is that the length of school period is extremely short in comparison to the rest of your career. The time goes by very quickly as your very busy with various studies and assignments. Hard work pays off!
