English Language Support

English Language Support is designed for Ryerson students whose first language of academic study is not English. The ELS staff brings many years of language-learning, international living, and university teaching experience to our work. We recognize that individual students have individual needs and we are committed to delivering a variety of English language support programs and services that fit into students’ busy lives. The aim of our programs is to assist students to improve overall communication skills.

Come see us if you:

  • Have language difficulties that may affect your academic performance
  • Feel that you need language improvement to help you become more confident
  • Need practice writing university essays
  • Have never studied in Canada before

We offer

  • Academic Writing Workshops
  • Individual help with your written assignments
  • One-on-one conversation & pronunciation practice

Programs & Services Include:

  • Paper Partners:
    Meet with another Ryerson student who is trained to help you with your written assignments.
  • Academic Language Skills Workshops:
    These one-hour modules offer specific guidance and exercises to help you overcome your current writing problems.
  • Conversational Connections:
    This program gives students an opportunity to practice their English language pronunciation and speaking skills in an out-of-classroom conversational situation.
  • English Communication Support (ECS) Classes:
    These classes enhance the speaking component of credit courses and may be tied to content in certain program areas.
