Ted Rogers School of Management hosts FEIC’s “Best in Class” Invitational Case Competition - November 16-17, 2012

Financial Executives International Canada (“FEIC”) Toronto Chapter is pleased to once again host the groundbreaking “Best in Class” Invitational Case Competition event at the state of the art Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University from November 16-17th, 2012.

Participation in the Best in Class competition is by invitation only to the top ranking schools in Canada. Last year 12 teams participated in the semifinal competition from the leading Canadian business schools invited to attend. This year invitations have been extended to the following 12 MBA schools:  Alberta School of Business; Dalhousie University School of Business; Desautels Faculty of Management; Haskayne School of Business; John Molson School of Business; Laurier School of Business and Economics; Queen’s School of Business; Richard Ivey School of Management; Rotman School of Management; Sauder School of Business; Schulich School of Business; and the Ryerson MBA at the Ted Rogers School of Management.

Corporate and FEIC local Chapter sponsorship of this event permits the organization to offer transportation to the competition, meals and accommodation for each team free of charge to each School and their student participants. Confirmed corporate sponsors to date include Miller Thomson, Ryan Global Tax Services and Certified Management Accountants of Ontario.  FEI Canada Chapters in Atlantic, Quebec, Southern Golden Horseshoe, South Western Ontario, Edmonton and Vancouver, in addition to Host Toronto Chapter, have also confirmed their financial support.

The Best in Class case competition is unique in that is not based upon a written case study. An existing public company is chosen as the case company and is not revealed until the launch on Friday morning of the two day competition. The event is kicked off with an introduction to the case company executives followed by a question and answer period.  In past competitions, XM Satellite Radio, Draxis Health, Pacific &Western Bank, Tim Hortons, HudBay Minerals and Cineplex Entertainment were the case companies selected for the competition, representing a broad cross section of industry sectors making current business news.  This year’s Case Company promises to be equally topical and newsworthy.

Following the semi-final presentations which begin on Saturday morning and are open to public viewing, four teams are selected to compete in the final round, where they have two hours to respond to a fictitious crisis at the case company. A panel of six judges in the semi-final round and six judges in the final round representing distinguished Canadian business leaders will be selected by FEIC Toronto Chapter to judge the student team presentations.

Cash prizes of $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500 are awarded for the first, second and third place teams. FEIC will also invite the first place team to attend the FEI Canada National Conference to be held in Lake Louise, Alberta in June, 2013.

The competition will end with a reception and awards dinner at the Great Hall, Hart House, University of Toronto, on the evening of Saturday, November 17, 2012 to which all student participants, judges, media, corporate sponsors, FEI members, and representatives of participating schools are invited.

Participation in the Best in Class Invitational Case Competition provides students with an unparalleled educational experience and platform to showcase their talents and abilities to corporate Canada while providing the corporate sponsors, distinguished judges and FEI Canada partner companies with a unique recruitment opportunity.

A past student team participant had this to say about his team’s Best in Class experience:

“It was an honour to attend this great event. It imparted significant value to each of our team members, as I am sure it did for all of the teams participating.  The hospitality shown by everyone involved with the competition and the host school, the Ted Rogers School of Business, was impeccable and could not have been more welcoming.  As well, we extend our thanks to the judges who so graciously volunteered time from their busy schedules to evaluate our case presentations .It is because of the great contributions of people such as yourself that greater connections between the business students and the business community of Canada can be created.  We are greatly appreciative and thankful for all you have done to create this great experience.”
