Ryerson MBA
Other National and International Competitions
For the second year in a row, Ryerson’s MBA students competed in the Finance Executives International (FEI) case competition. In spite of being the only program without a finance major in the competition, Ryerson’s MBA team did well, placing in the middle of the pack. The teams competing were UBC, Alberta, Calgary, De Groote, Ivey, TRSM, Schulich, Rotman, HEC, McGill and St. Mary's. The results were Alberta 1st, Rotman 2nd, and McGill 3rd. Ryerson finished 6th. Ryerson’s team comprised Angela Chan, Anthony Deonarain, Candace Huntley, and Guin Orvis. Dale Carl, Director of Graduate Students at Ryerson said: "This definitely was a finance competition and our team did very well showing that our well-rounded program prepares students to compete with the best."
TRSM also competed in the John Molson MBA International Case Competition in Montreal during the first week of January. This is the largest and oldest MBA case competition, with 36 teams from 11 countries. In the round robin part of the tournament, each team presents 5 cases against other teams in their division over 4 days, followed by the semi-finals and finals.
Ryerson’s team (Adon Irani, Candace Huntley, Farzeen Saleh, and Victor Salomon) presented polished, thorough and creative case analyses, but did not make it into the finals this year. However, all of the competitors acknowledged that the team was excellent, and its members were also leaders in the “spirit” side of the competition.
The overall winners were Porto (from Portugal) 1st, Queen's 2nd, and Kaiserslautern (from Germany) 3rd.
Congratulations to our team for representing TRSM so capably.
MBA Director Jim Tiessen stressed: “The Ryerson MBA is unique. Its relatively small class size provides opportunities for almost all students to participate in one competition or another. We encourage this from day 1 in our orientation because we know the real world requires professionals who can think on their feet, work effectively as a team and present persuasively. We are very, very proud of every single one of our students who competed this year. And we are very grateful to the faculty and alumni who made time to coach and prepare them. Special Kudos of course to Dale Carl, our coach extraordinaire and secret weapon.”
