Ryerson University launches the Indigenous Communication and Design Network
TORONTO, Feb. 23, 2017 -- external,The Faculty of Communication and Design (FCAD) at Ryerson University is proud to announce the launch of a new incubator to support Indigenous artists. The Indigenous Communication and Design Network (ICAD) celebrates artists, makers and the creative community through the creation of Indigenous art, storytelling and research. This network supports the unique mosaic of Indigenous creative activities and acts as a place to mentor and educate students and researchers in Indigenous culture, communication and design.
Working with Indigenous artists and scholars in FCAD, ICAD will showcase its first art installation, Survival to Sovereignty, during the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences conference, taking place at Ryerson University, May 27 - June 2.
“In partial response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada recommendations concerning post-secondary education, this multifaceted initiative promotes interest, expertise, and understanding with respect to Indigenous communication and creativity,“ says Lila Pine, director of ICAD. ”It will foster an understanding of Indigenous worldviews among future communicators and creative innovators.”
“The creation of this incubator is only the first step in how we will support this community of artists. The idea of building a traditional structure with ceremonial halls, performance space, art galleries, Elders' rooms, teaching areas, and workshop studios, is something we are currently exploring,” says Charles Falzon, FCAD dean.
A call within the community will go out to receive submissions to be included in the Survival to Sovereignty art show and the search for an artist-in-residence is underway. This artist will lead the mentorship program and encourage students to explore Indigenous communication and design.
The Faculty of Communication and Design is the cultural and creative hub at Ryerson University. With its nine prestigious schools in media and creative industries, FCAD’s interdisciplinary innovation and education are shaping the future of the creative industries.
