Stuart Ewen

STUART EWEN is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Film and Media Studies at Hunter College, New York. He is also a Professor in the Ph.D Programs in History and in Sociology at the City University of New York Graduate Center.

Ewen's most recent book is the Revised Edition of All Consuming Images: The Politics of Style in Contemporary Culture, a book which provided the foundation for Bill Moyers' 4-part, Peabody, Emmy, and National Education Association Awards winning PBS series, "The Public Mind." His other books include PR! A Social History of Spin, a historical examination of the development of public relations as a force in twentieth century American life and a finalist for the prestigious 1996 Financial Times Global Business Book Award; Channels of Desire, and Captains of Consciousness: Advertising and the Social Roots of the Consumer Culture.

He lectures frequently at major universities, museums, and art centers both in North America and internationally. In May 1997 he keynoted the annual awards ceremony of the Publicity Club of New England, and the PROMAX/Broadcast Design Association Conference in Chicago. His writing regularly appears in Artforum and has appeared in Art in America, PRINT, and other venues. Under the nom de guerre Archie Bishop, he has worked as a photographer, pamphleteer, graphic artist, multimedia prankster, and political situationist for nearly thirty years.
