Excerpt:

And so, slowly, reluctantly, I have been driven back to my starting-point, like a man who at the end of a tremendous journey is told that he has been sleepwalking. (Lawrence Durrell)

Christmas came and went, as it had always, and we sat on a veranda and looked at Cassiopeia and Camelopardalis and entered the kitchen to use the blender and read about wars in books with great bindings of green and polished the tureen and arranged cookies on plates in the shape of our fates. A card from Eddie. Another card from Edie. A card from von Schwangenhausen, from a U. S. Army base near Bremen, indecipherable beyond the precincts of his voice. But it had the phrase, "Question of going in new direction through door that is open." A card from Lafayette, he's bought a new house, he's bought grouse, his three year old lavender point Siamese has caught a mouse. A card from Uncle Normie, he's had a bad cold, from taking a cold bath. A card from Toots Pankin, the weather is great in North Miami Beach, the price of condominiums has gone down; Toots is such a clown, his eyes are brown.
