The Blue Whale

Toronto: Les Trois O, 1994

Excerpt:

"If you haven't met the beast," said Audie quite forthrightly, "I admit I'm disappointed. That is what holds you back. You don't meet people, you meet projections. You will have to confront something you cannot explain, and you will have to be devoured by it before you can become pure." Greyson didn't understand why Audie always had to be fixated on purity and obstruction and philosophical shadows. He was going to say it had been an evening that ultimately wouldn't mean anything to him. But Audie interrupted by saying, "Let me be!" Or, at least--because later, when he was asked about this, he admitted he couldn't be sure Audie had said anything at all--he thought he heard those words and that they came from Audie's bed. And, "Shh, Grey!" So Greyson waited. And Audie said, "You see?" Greyson didn't know what to answer to that, because he didn't see, but he felt that he was warm.
