Becoming a Preceptor

The Midwifery Education Program welcomes applications from practising midwives who wish to become preceptors. The following is a list of the requirements to be eligible to be a preceptor in the Midwifery Education Program:

  • General Registrant of the College of Midwives of Ontario (CMO) who has completed her new registrant year, according to the CMO rules;
  • No conditions on registration;
  • Hospital privileges with no conditions imposed by the hospital;
  • Preceptor Application form completed;
  • Attendance at the New Preceptor Workshop;
  • Completion of online new preceptor modules
  • Provide two references to be completed by persons familiar with your skills as a teacher, such as midwives you have supervised, clients who have taken childbirth classes from you, a practice partner who has taught with you, or other appropriate persons;
  • Approved as a preceptor by MEP;
  • Availability of sufficient birth numbers in practice during the specified term. (See "Guide to Planned Minimum Birth Numbers");
  • Preceptor must comply with all MEP policies, guidelines, and requirements to be eligible to be a preceptor.

Midwives are required to inform the Placement Coordinator if their CMO registration status or hospital privilege status changes (i.e., if conditions are imposed) or if their client numbers fall below the required number in the term.
