Ryerson University unveiled the new Harry Rosen Lecture Theatre in recognition of Harry Rosen Inc.'s $1-million gift to the university at a gala event last evening.
"We are delighted to name this state-of-the-art lecture theatre after one of Canada's most distinguished entrepreneurs and leading menswear retailers," says Dean Ken Jones, Ted Rogers School of Management.
Harry Rosen, long known as a leader in the retail sector, is one of Ryerson's strongest supporters, often seen on campus. He is a member of the university's Board of Governors and is actively involved with the advisory council at Ryerson's Ted Rogers School of Retail Management.
"Harry Rosen's wisdom, expertise and most of all, his passion and commitment to enhancing Ryerson's academic mission has enriched the university in immeasurable ways," says Ryerson University President Sheldon Levy.
"Without the generous support of great friends like Harry Rosen Inc., Ryerson University wouldn't be where it is today - a dynamic success story and a rapidly growing centre of teaching and research, at the forefront of career-focused university education in Canada," says Adam B. Kahan, Ryerson University's Vice-President, University Advancement.
Some 100 guests including prominent business leaders, staff from Harry Rosen Inc. and family and friends of the Rosens attended the gala event yesterday evening.
"I have watched the development of Ryerson over the years and consider it a privilege to have participated in the Retail Management program and to now sit on the Board of Governors," says Harry Rosen, Executive Chairman and Founder, Harry Rosen Inc. "I'm truly honoured to have this facility bear my name."
Adds Larry Rosen, CEO & Chairman of Harry Rosen Inc: "We are great admirers of Ryerson University and its dynamic management program, and we're thrilled to have this opportunity to honour our founder, one of the greatest visionaries ever in Canadian retail."
After unveiling a plaque naming the lecture theatre after Harry Rosen, President Levy and Dean Jones presented the Ryerson Chair to the Rosens. The Chair, designed by a former Ryerson School of Interior Design student, is proudly presented to the university's leading benefactors in honour of their generous gifts. The Rosens also presented a portrait of Harry Rosen that will hang in the theatre.
The newly named Harry Rosen Lecture Theatre, located in the Ryerson Business Building, provides students with the latest technology to enhance their learning environment. The wireless lecture theatre, which has seating for 200, is outfitted with a multi-media system and a ceiling-mounted camera that can record lectures to be broadcast over the Internet.
