Ryerson University celebrates achievements of strong black Canadian women

In 1946, Viola Desmond, a Halifax-born beautician and business woman, stood up for her rights when she refused to move from her seat in a whites-only section of a movie theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. To honour her strength and courage, along with the countless women and men who followed in her footsteps, Ryerson University is proud to present the fourth annual Viola Desmond Day Awards ceremony on Monday, March 5, 6:30 p.m., Podium (area connecting Jorgenson Hall to the Library Building), POD-250, 2nd floor, 380 Victoria St.

The evening ceremony will celebrate the extraordinary achievements and contributions that women from Ryerson’s Black community have made. A faculty member, a staff member, a Ryerson student and a high school student from the Toronto area will be honoured.

Each winner, chosen by a committee of Ryerson students and staff, will receive awards named after four prominent Black Canadian women:

·Ms. Viola Desmond High School Student Award

·Hon. Jean Augustine Faculty Award (to be presented by Hon. Augustine’s daughter)

·Ms. Violet Blackman Staff Award

·Ms. Nancy Morton Ryerson Student Award

Ryerson University’s Black History Awareness Committee, which comprises the Tri-Mentoring Program, Discrimination & Harassment Prevention Services, Ryerson Students’ Union, Library and Archives and the United Black Students of Ryerson, organized the ceremony. Sheldon Levy, Ryerson University’s president and vice-chancellor, will give introductory remarks.
