TORONTO, Jan. 16, 2013 --- Navdeep Bains, former Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Brampton South, has been appointed a distinguished visiting professor at The Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University. His appointment is effective for a one-year term.

When first elected to Parliament in 2004, Bains was only 26 years old and the youngest Liberal MP. In October 2005, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to then Prime Minister Paul Martin and sworn into the Queen’s Privy Council. Bains served as the official opposition critic on a number of portfolios including natural resources, international trade and the treasury board.  He was re-elected in 2006 and 2008, and served until 2011.

“It is a pleasure to welcome Navdeep Bains to Ryerson University this year,” said John Isbister, interim provost and vice-president academic. “Navdeep distinguished himself at such a young age on the national stage with his political passion and acumen; sharing his experiences with Ryerson students will enrich their academic experience.”

In his role as a distinguished visiting professor, Bains will develop a business and public policy lecture series that will bring some of Canada’s top business leaders and politicians into the MBA classroom. He will also oversee the development of a mentorship program that will match business executives with students in a field of their career interest.

“Mentorship programs are about fostering greater partnerships between students and industry leaders,” said Bains. “They provide a unique and valuable learning experience for students; it’s exciting to be an integral part of one at the Ted Rogers School of Management.”

Bains will also help to establish connections with community business leaders and organizations, and seek opportunities for student career advancement.

“We look forward to Navdeep Bains’ contributions,” said Ken Jones, dean, Ted Rogers School of Management. “The relationships he will help build between our students and our school with real-world business and political leaders will greatly enhance student opportunities for career success.”

Since leaving Parliament Hill, Bains has remained engaged with politics and his community. He is an adjunct lecturer at the University of Waterloo, provides frequent media commentary on public policy and current affairs and is a vocal advocate for engaging youth in politics. He is a certified management accountant and received his MBA from the University of Windsor and bachelor of administrative studies from York University.
