



TORONTO, Feb. 5, 2013 --- Rwanda, Syria, and now Mali -- countries that have been the world’s hot spots for genocide, terrorism and civil war. How can society prevent these events from happening in the first place? Top experts from Canada and the U.S. will gather at Ryerson University to discuss detecting and preventing mass atrocities. Panel speakers include:
· Jeremy Kinsman, former Canadian ambassador, director of the Democracy Support project for the Community of Democracies, and visiting distinguished diplomat at Ryerson University
· Clint Curle, head, stakeholder relations, Canadian Museum for Human Rights
· Michael Abramowitz, director, Centre for the Prevention of Genocide, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Center for the Prevention of Mass Atrocities
· Stefanie Frease, professor, University of Washington and former special advisor and investigator to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia
· Jill Sinclair, assistant deputy minister for policy, Department of National Defence and former executive director of the R2P Commission
· Robert LaGamma, president, Council for a Community of Democracies
· Frank Chalk, director, Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies, Concordia University
· Kyle Matthews, senior deputy director, Will to Intervene Project, Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies, Concordia University.
The conference, part of Ryerson’s International Issues Discussion series, a student-led forum designed to engage the community on global current events and issues, is sponsored by the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the Canadian International Council and Ryerson University.
