On Friday May 10, Yonge-Dundas Square and Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre will come alive as hundreds of Ontario high school students go head-to-head in engineering and design competitions.
The second annual Design on Dundas event will pit students from seventeen Ontario high schools against each other in a popsicle stick bridge building competition and a rocket launching competition. Popsicle stick bridges will be judged on design and performance as they are tested with weights of 20 lbs or more. Rockets will be judged on accuracy in hitting a specific target. Both competitions will take place in two rounds, at 10:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m, with the Popsicle stick bridge competition taking place at Yonge-Dundas Square, and the rocket competition taking place in Ryerson’s Quadrangle.
New to Design on Dundas this year is an R/C plane competition, which will see teams race a radio controlled plane around Ryerson’s varsity ice rink at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. The R/C plane competition will also take place at 10:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Capstone projects completed by Ryerson University engineering students will also be on display as part of the Innovation Showcase in Yonge-Dundas Square.
