Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens

Ryerson University illuminated the ice at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at The Gardens for the first time today. The university was joined by many of the project partners including Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Galen G. Weston, Executive Chairman of Loblaw Companies Limited, and naming donor Peter Gilgan, founder and CEO of Mattamy Homes, in a ceremony that celebrated and recognized the support of the university’s students, partners, sponsors and funders.

Sheldon Levy, president of Ryerson University (left), and Peter Gilgan, founder and CEO of Mattamy Homes, proudly display a hockey puck emblazoned with logos of the Ryerson Rams and Mattamy Homes. Gilgan contributed $15 million to Ryerson University, $10 million as a charitable gift and $5 million for the sponsorship of the ice rink.

Construction crews cement-in the top layer of the ice rink at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens. The full-sized rink is 100 feet below the iconic dome of the Gardens and 50 feet above street level, making it the highest elevated skating rink in Toronto.

A new Maple Leaf Gardens heritage marquee on the new Mattamy Athletic Centre. The restored marquee recreates the historic character of the iconic building signage, which was in place for decades from the 1940s on.

Ryerson president Sheldon Levy,  pictured, in the seating area of the NHL-sized ice rink at the new Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens. The rink, located on the third level of the facility, is 50 feet above grade and 100 feet under the original dome.

The Ryerson Rams hockey teams will skate on Mattamy Home Ice, the Mattamy Athletic Centre’s new NHL-sized ice rink, when the centre opens for the local community this fall.

This copper box, (20cm x 12cm x 12cm) lay hidden beneath the cornerstone of Maple Leaf Gardens for nearly 80 years. Discovered by Ryerson University and Loblaw Companies Limited in September 2011, it held a dozen items including newspapers, hockey rulebooks, a letter from the Maple Leaf Gardens directors, and a small ivory elephant - the significance of which is unknown.
