RYERSON STUDENTS GEAR UP FOR
ORIENTATION WEEK 2013

TORONTO, August 20, 2013 --- In just a few weeks, Ryerson’s campus will soon be buzzing with activity as more than 9,000 first-year students gear up for two weeks of fun-filled orientation challenges, competitions and activities.

Starting on Sunday, Aug. 25 and running until Friday, Sept. 6, this year's orientation highlights include:

 

Move-in Day for Students | Sun. Aug. 25 | 10 a.m. - noon | Pitman Hall Residence
Sunday will be a big day for first-year students as they say farewell to their parents and move into residence at Pitman Hall. Residence staff will be on hand to answer questions and help students get settled into their new “home away from home.” Note to media: only exterior campus shots of students and parents are permitted.

Orientation Launch | Mon. Aug. 26 | 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. | The Quad (Victoria and Gould St.)
Bright-eyed first-year students will be given a rousing welcome by Ryerson’s OrientationTeam, alumni and staff to launch this year’s Orientation Week. Student groups carrying ceremonial “torches” will enter the campus quad and walk in a circle led by Eggy the Ram and the Spirit Squad.
Yoga Fitness | Tues. Aug. 27 | 11 a.m. to noon | The Quad
Downward dog anyone?: Students will start off their day with a relaxing group yoga class in the sun, led by the O-Team and Ryerson Athletics.

O' Fest Street Festival | Tues. Aug. 27 | 1 - 5 p.m. | Gould Street
Students will celebrate back-to-school on Gould Street with an afternoon of fun including carnival games, obstacle courses, cotton candy and popcorn.

Mystery Guinness Challenge | Wed. Aug. 28 | 2 - 3:30 p.m. | The Quad

Continuing in Ryerson’s annual tradition of attempting to smash Guinness World Records, Ryerson students will attempt to break another world record. This year’s challenge is top-secret; the challenge itself will be revealed at the event.

Rams Women's Hockey Game | Wed. Aug. 28 | 6:30 - 8 p.m. | Mattamy Athletic Centre
Students and campus mascot Eggy will be sporting their blue and gold colours and showing their school pride as they cheer on the Ryerson Rams women’s hockey team at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. sity’s dance team and cheerleaders leading the way.

Welcome Party for International Students | Thurs. Aug. 29 | 3 – 4:30 p.m. | POD 250

President Sheldon Levy will be on hand to roll out the welcome mat to Ryerson international students to the university and to Toronto. There will be great food, prizes and cultural performances for students.

Flashmob | Fri. Aug. 30 | 3 – 4 p.m. | The Quad
Students will bust out their best dance moves and participate in a giant flash mob right in the centre of the campus.

Campus Groups Day and BBQ | Wed. Sept. 4 | 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. | Gould St. and Quad

Campus groups will set up booths along Gould St. to coax those shy first-year students out of their shells to join a student group with those who share similar interests. Ryerson staff will also be serving up hotdogs, cotton candy and popcorn on the Quad for students.

Parade and Picnic Concert | Fri. Sept. 6, 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. | Gould and Yonge Sts.
As a grand finale, thousands of Ryerson students will be decked out in blue and gold at the university’s 53rd annual parade and picnic, the university’s longest-running and largest orientation event. Students will parade up Yonge St. to the university’s Mattamy Athletic Centre, for a special music concert.

Picnic and street fair on Gould St.: 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Parade along Yonge St.: 4:30 – 6 p.m. (Route: Quad-Yonge St.-Mattamy Athletic Centre)
