Dr. Bala Venkatesh, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ryerson University, and a highly respected specialist in power systems, renewable energy, optimization techniques and intelligent systems has been appointed Academic Director of the Centre for Urban Energy.
In his role as Academic Director his responsibilities include supervision of the researchers working at the Centre, securing external funding and engaging in outreach. He will be guided by an advisory council composed of representatives of the three founding sponsors, Hydro One, Ontario Power Authority and Toronto Hydro Corporation, experts and other invited members.
Dr. Ventakesh brings outstanding credentials to the position. He obtained his BE in electrical engineering from Madras University and his ME and PhD in power systems engineering from Anna University, India. Dr. Venkatesh immigrated to Canada in 2005. Before joining the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ryerson University in 2008, Dr. Venkatesh was an associate professor in electrical engineering at the University of New Brunswick. From 2000 to 2004 he was a senior lecturer and associate professor at Multimedia University in Malaysia.
His research has led to over sixty-five peer-reviewed articles in technical journals and conference publications and the training of 28 graduate and post-graduate students. Dr. Venkatesh has also been involved in numerous collaborative projects with the energy sector.
Dr. Venkatesh is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Vice-Chair, Toronto Section, Power and Energy Society and a member of the Wind Power Standing Committee, Independent Electricity System Operator. He is a Professional Engineer in the provinces of Ontario and New Brunswick.
