The Chang School celebrates Leaders in Learning

The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education celebrated outstanding students, instructors, clients and contributors at its annual Leaders in Learning awards.
“I hope all of you who are honoured here tonight feel the pride we feel,” said Dean Anita Shilton. “And to our guests, I hope you have a sense of the enormous commitment there is to The Chang School and to Ryerson.”
MC’ed by Janet Hercz, Director of Marketing and Communications at The Chang School, the event featured remarks from former politician Zanana Akande; the Honourable Greg Sorbara, Ontario Minister of Finance; President Sheldon Levy; and Adam B. Kahan, Vice-President, University Advancement.
“Education has been my whole life,” said Akande, the first black woman appointed to the federal cabinet. “I’ve been rooting for it. I’ve been involved in it. I’ve been critical of it. I’ve been demanding for more and better and it all seems to be exemplified here at The Chang School.”
The Chang School Awards were presented by faculty and friends of Ryerson, while the Continuing Education Students’ Association of Ryerson(CESAR) Awards were presented by CESAR President Jeremy Salter.
“This is a great opportunity to honour academic leaders within the CESAR membership,” said Salter.
Kristen Wallace was one of four recipients of the Marsh Jeanneret Memorial Award, which honours the academic excellence of Publishing students committed to careers in the publishing industry.
“I’m extremely grateful,” said Wallace. “It’s a great honour to get this award and be recognized for something that I’m passionate about.”
Vice-President Kahan congratulated the award winners and announced the creation of a new endowed award. Starting next year, the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Award will recognize the academic achievement of Lighting Design certificate students.
“Awards like this allow us to continue to recognize the excellence and commitment of our students,” said Vice-President Kahan.
Following the awards presentation, a three-minute video of Chang School highlights was shown, featuring original music by Adrian Ellis, Information and Program Support Assistant at The Chang School.
“Ryerson has a unique model for continuing and adult education,” said President Levy. “Congratulations to the leaders in learning who are gathered here this evening. Thank you all for your decision to choose Ryerson.”
