Rowing team and men's soccer train hard to win big

Ryerson's rowing and men's soccer teams came out big winners this past weekend.
After delivering hard-hitting performances, the rowing team scored its first-ever gold medal at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championship on Oct. 24, while men's soccer closed the season with their best record in three decades and head to the playoffs.
Rams rowers Matt Buie and Philippe Roy took home gold in the men's heavy double race. The duo finished fifth in the same race at last year's championship and placed third at the Brock Invitational two weeks ago. Coach Dominic Kahn said he was convinced with more preparation, his team could improve on the third place result at the OUA championship.
"The guys literally executed the perfect race plan that we set out and they rowed perfectly," Kahn said.
And improve they did, crossing the 1,300-metre mark with a boat-length lead, pulling ahead of crews from Western, Queen's and University of Toronto. Roy said he was proud to be a Ryerson Ram and that snagging a gold medal was "definitely a satisfying feeling."
Capping the championship weekend, Kahn was nominated for OUA Coach of the Year and the Rams also picked up a silver medal in the junior varsity men's double competition.
Continuing the powerhouse play Oct. 25, the men's soccer team coached by Director of Athletics Ivan Joseph made school history when it defeated the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins 3-0 at BMO Field. The win meant the Rams recorded their first winning season since the early 1970s and their first plus .500 season since joining the OUA in 1986.
Defeating RMC improved Ryerson's record to five wins, four losses and five ties.
The Rams begin their playoff drive Oct. 28 at Laurentian University. The Rams and Voyageurs finished the season tied for fourth with 20 points each.
